According to EW, the idea has been looming for some time among the writers since season four.  When the showrunners got a call from Warner Brothers animation studio, the idea started to become a reality. The conversations continued over the years and when the show got an early renewal for season 13, the creators found the time to make it happen.

All Supernatural fans know that Scooby-Doo is Dean Winchester’s (Jensen Ackles) favorite cartoon. So far we know that in this episode, Dean saves a pawn shop owner when a plush dinosaur comes to life.  The shop owner gives Dean a free tv after wrestling the dinosaur. (Ha!) Sam (Jared Padalecki) thinks the TV is sketchy and he would be right.  The thing sucks the Winchesters and Castiel (Misha Collins) into a Scooby-Doo cartoon. That’s every kid’s dream!

“Once they get over their amazement at being in the cartoon, two things happen. They say, ’We’ve been in a situation like this before with the Trickster and I think we’re supposed to play this out.’ And then they realize they’re in a Scooby-Doo cartoon, which makes Dean incredibly excited because Scooby-Doo was his favorite cartoon growing up.” -Co-showrunner Robert Singer

The Winchesters have to adjust to being in a world that Dean has full knowledge of. Look for your typical mystery to solve, Dean holding hands with Daphne, and lots of hijinks, but this isn’t a Scooby Doo episode.

“They walk into an old episode of Scooby-Doo, but it may end up being a new episode of Supernatural.” –  Co-Showrunner Andrew Dabb

Fans will have to wait until March 29 to find out  how Dean, Sam and Castiel fit in with the Mystery Gang and how they get back to the real world.  Supernatural airs Thursdays on the CW.
