If you have ever watched an episode of the Mother Lands RPG show on Tanya DePass‘s Twitch channel, then you already know how amazing this campaign setting is. And now they are giving us the chance to explore this original afrofuturist tabletop RPG (role-playing game) for ourselves! DePass is a game designer, Hugh-nominated editor and founder of I Need Diverse Games, a non-profit organization dedicated to better diversifying all aspects of gaming. And the Into the Mother Lands sourcebook is giving People of Color a world of their own.

Into the Mother Lands tells the story of a lost expedition. They were sent to find a new world that never actually materialized. Instead, centuries later, these explorers find themselves living on an adopted homeworld called Musalia. The sourcebook will help players create their own characters who can be descendants of the alien culture that called Musalia home. Or they can be a member of one of the cultures that emerged through the blending of human and alien technology over the centuries.
The gameplay in Into the Mother Lands heavily focuses on exploration in a world that appeals to fans of Wakanda and Star Trek. One of the best parts of this series? It is an all-Person of Color-created sci-fi universe that removes the ideas of imperialist and colonialist narratives. It allows People of Color a place to take pride in themselves without having to retool a narrative to fit their character. Eugenio “DMJazzyHands” Vargas, the storyteller for Mother Lands RPG, shared how excited he is for Into the Mother Lands.
Over the last year, we’ve told awesome stories in a POC-developed world where slavery and colonialism aren’t baggage for our characters. We’ve had so much fun telling these stories, but I know people at home also have stories to tell, and I can’t wait to hear all about them.
DePass worked alongside B. Dave Walters, Gabe Hicks, Jasmine Bhullar and Vargas to bring this sourcebook to life. And you can help support them and getting the book into the hands of gamers everything. Into the Mother Lands launched on Kickstarter today! Like all Kickstarters, you will pledge a certain amount and receive the items from that tier. These include a digital quickstart guide, a digital Into the Mother Lands sourcebook, physical copies of the books and so much more.
The Into the Mother Lands Kickstarter will run until June 20, 2021, and was completely funded in the first 90 minutes! Be sure to check out the official page for more information and updates from DePass and the others. Of course, I highly suggest checking out the Mother Lands RPG show while you wait for your copy. The cast includes DePass, Deejay Knight, Michael Sinclair II, Aabria Iyengar, Krystina Arielle and Vargas. They just kicked off their second season in April and have an entire first season to binge!
