Jason Reitman recently directed a live reading of The Empire Strikes Back, in conjunction with LACMA, as part of an ongoing series of events.
Now there is no footage or downloadable version of this reading but I can tell you who was in it!
Aaron Paul as Luke Skywalker, Jessica Alba as Princess Leia, Ellen Page as Han Solo, J.K.Simmons as Darth Vader, Dennis Haysbert as Lando Calrissian, Rainn Wilson as Chewbacca, Kevin Pollack as Yoda, and a scene stealing Stephan Merchant as C3PO. As a surprise guest, Mark Hamill was invited to play Obi Won Kenobi which blew the audience’s mind!
Since this was a case of you-had-to-be-there here is an interview from starwars.com with Jason Reitman about the live reading!
Jason Reitman on Ellen Page as Han Solo:
“I wonder if Ellen Page could play Princess Leia — wait, I wonder if Ellen Page could play Han Solo!” [Laughs] And it just clicked. At that point I was like, “Okay. I think we have something special here.”
“Han Solo is such a unique character, right? I mean, particularly in a strangely kind of religious universe, where people believe in a concept called the Force, and the people you meet in the first film are sweet farm people, and really earnest. Then you meet this guy who doesn’t care. He’s very unique to the Star Wars universe in that he is the single ironic character. No one else has irony in that film, and Ellen has tons of irony. That’s kind of what makes her perfect. Personality-wise, she is Han Solo. I knew that would be fun.”
