Trail of Lightning took home the Locus Award for Best First Novel for author Rebecca Roanhorse. Locus Magazine announced the 2019 Locus Awards on Saturday. The awards are administered by the Locus Science Fiction Foundation and voted on by readers.
The Locus Awards are presented to winners of Locus Magazine‘s annual readers’ poll. Locus Awards are presented at an annual banquet. Trail of Lightning was one of ten finalists in the Best First Novel category. Other categories include Best Science Fiction Novel, Best Fantasy Novel, Best Horror Novel, and Best Young Adult Novel.
Trail of Lightning is the first of a four book series called the Sixth World. The story is set in the future, where Maggie Hoskie and her friend Kai Arviso try to uncover the mystery of new monsters in Dinétah. They have to deal with some unsavory gods who enjoy the mystery as if it were a movie. By the end, Maggie has to sacrifice her friendship with Kai to bury the Lightning God Neizghání. The twist is that Neizghání used to be Maggie’s teacher and first love. So in the end, Maggie goes home alone, having betrayed not one, but two loves.
This is Roanhorse’s first award for Trail of Lightning. The book was also a finalist for a Hugo and Nebula awards for Best Novel of 2018. Roanhorse’s next book is the first novel of the Star Wars: Journey to The Rise of Skywalker series called Resistance Reborn, due out in November.
Geek Girl Authority and this Indigenerd would like to extend our congratulations to Roanhorse and her publishing team.
Trail of Lightning and the follow-up novel, Storm of Locusts are available in stores and on audio.
