On Friday, June 14, 2023, Marvel Comics announced that Iman Vellani will co-write the upcoming Ms. Marvel comic. Vellani plays Ms. Marvel in the eponymous Disney+ series and the upcoming big-screen Marvel Cinematic Universe outing, The Marvels. The new comic, Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant, will be written by Vellani and Sabir Pirzada. It will feature interior art by Carlos Gomez and Adam Gorham and main covers by Sara Pichelli.

In the panels of Marvel Comics, Ms. Marvel was originally an Inhuman. However, in the final episode of Ms. Marvel on Disney+, it was revealed that the onscreen incarnation of the character is a mutant. But now, a story that is taking place across multiple Marvel Comics titles will bring the on-panel variant closer to the onscreen Kamala.

Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant

First, Ms. Marvel was killed in Amazing Spider-Man #26 in May 2023. This was an upsetting development. However, savvy readers of superhero comics were confident that Kamala would make her return. This is not an unprecedented occurrence. Both Doctor Strange and the Scarlet Witch died in the panels of Marvel Comics before the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and both were restored to life in advance of the movie’s debut in March 2022.

Then earlier this week, Fallen Friend: The Death of Ms. Marvel #1 arrived at your Local Comic Shop (LCS). Readers who scanned a QR code at the end of the issue were linked to this post-issue scene. The scene all but confirmed what we now know for sure, thanks to the Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant press release. Kamala will be resurrected as a mutant via the Krakoan Resurrection Protocols.

For the series, Ms. Marvel will get a new costume designed by Jamie McKelvie. This is exciting because McKelvie redesigned Captain Marvel’s costume in 2012 and designed Ms. Marvel’s original costume in 2013. Ms. Marvel: The New Mutant #1 will boast a variant cover by Stanley “Artgerm” Lau depicting Kamala in the new costume. You can get your first look at this cover in the cover image of this article.

Ms. Marvel Season 1 is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
