New Image Promises a Gritty Lara Croft in TOMB RAIDER

I’m so ready for this! Thanks to Empire Magazine we have a new look at Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot. Shed all your fears of it being close to the Angelina Jolie films of the mid-2000s. We’re in for a new, gritty Lara Croft.

Vikander was able to talk about the role a little bit, giving us a better sense of the film. We’ve only really seen the images of her – very few of them, actually. So what does Vikander say about Croft in this film and how they approached her?

We asked, ‘What are the famous traits of this person?’ ‘How can we demonstrate them in the story, but make her feel like a young woman in 2018?’

They somewhat answer this by having her be a cycle courier in London. Cause biking is healthy! But instead of artifacts leading her away on an epic quest, it’s her father. His 7 year disappearance causes her to abandon everything and search for him. They also somewhat answer this by being inspired by the latest game iteration of her. No longer sporting those short shorts, she’s wearing pants and getting her hands quite dirty.

Hopefully they retain her desire for artifacts in tact as well. Besides being a kick butt adventurer, she’s a history lover. So – with hope, her father’s final quest to a tomb in Japan will bring out the adventurer in her and we can see her history geek flag fly. Or, at the very least, we can see her become the archaeologist we know and love. We’ll have to wait and see! Fingers crossed for a trailer soon, too.
