From indie game development studio Endflame comes a new psychological horror game for us to play. Ikai gives players the chance to explore an unholy shrine in feudal Japan. The story follows Naoko, a priestess who awakens within the now unholy walls of this sacred place. She must face off against countless yokai as she brings peace to the shrine. The design originated as the team’s interest in Japenese culture and grew naturally into the first-person psychological horror.

Ikai‘s trailer first shows off the atmosphere of the world players will be exploring. Within the walls of the shrine, we get our first glimpse at the Yoaki that grace its halls. They are as terrifying as you could imagine. Each takes a different form from large behemoths to hands grabbing at you through the walls. The world itself looks to be a character unto itself and the perfect place to explore.
The creation and use of protective scrolls were introduced in the Ikai trailer as well. We will need to write the protective seals and use them to possibly cleanse Yoaki or seal them away. It looks as if our mental state will have an effect on how easy or hard it is to write. They have not commented on whether we will need to find the items needed to create scrolls or if we will need to find things to learn which ones to use on specific Yoaki.
Ikai will release in 2021 on PC through Steam. Be sure to add it to your wishlist to learn when it goes live.
