Idris Elba fans, today is your lucky day! As reported by Deadline and revealed by the actor himself, Elba has signed on to voice Knuckles the Echidna for Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2!
The announcement comes hot on the heels of Elba’s latest release, DC’s The Suicide Squad, wherein he portrayed Bloodsport, an immensely gifted sharpshooter who hospitalized Superman. He’s also known for starring as DCI John Luther in BBC’s Luther, which earned Elba a slew of Emmy nominations. Elba can be seen in Netflix’s upcoming Western flick, The Harder They Fall, and 2022’s fantasy epic, Three Thousand Years of Longing.

Knuckles is a red Echidna who’s the guardian of the Master Emerald. He’s also the last of his race. Knuckles harbors the ability to scale walls as well as glide. He sports a pair of spiked gloves and is a skilled fighter. His relationship with Sonic is a complicated one. Initially, Knuckles enters the scene as Sonic’s antagonist, but he eventually views the latter as a friend and rival.
Sonic the Hedgehog burst onto the blockbuster circuit before the pandemic. It raked in close to $320 million globally and was a hit for Paramount. Jeff Fowler is returning to helm the sequel, while Pat Casey and Josh Miller pen the script.
Now, the main cast is also reprising their roles from the original film. This includes Ben Schwartz as Sonic, our titular hedgehog, James Marsden as Tom, Tika Sumpter as Maddie, Natasha Rothwell as Rachel, Adam Pally as Wade and Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik.
It’s unclear whether Colleen O’Shaughnessey will return as Tails, but the key art for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 does boast two tails, so here’s hoping! Shemar Moore is a new cast addition, but as of now, his role is unknown.
