The new film, The Belko Experiment, looks like Hunger Games or Battle Royale but for the office. I hesitate to use the phrase “Hunger Games meets Office Space” because there doesn’t seem to be any humor at all in this movie. The Belko Experiment was written and produced by James Gunn, but directed by Greg McLean.
The premise is simple, people go about their normal day of work until the building becomes a multi-story prison where a homicidal voice instructs the subjects of the experiment on what to do. The instructions are also simple, kill or be killed. So, there you go, it’s literally Hunger Games or Battle Royale but without the nature filled areas or fun shenanigans of Office Space. Or maybe a better comparison would be Hunger Games meets Portal, seems like GLaDOS would fit in quite well and the experiment is being televised to some degree. Ya know what, I’m just going to call the voice GLaDOS.
Okay, so let’s talk about this for a few minutes. Based on the description, and the trailer, the office building is in Bogota, Colombia (South America) and it’s in the middle of nowhere. Furthermore, to work there, you have to get a tracking chip implanted in your head. If a remote location in South America didn’t send off warning bells, then a literal chip in my head sure would. I mean, I’ve seen how bad these things can go, Order 66 comes to mind. But no, these aren’t used to control a person, they are weaponized and used to kill whoever is unlucky enough to have one. Fantastic.
In a twisted social experiment, a group of 80 Americans are locked in their high-rise corporate office in Bogota, Colombia and ordered by an unknown voice coming from the company’s intercom system to participate in a deadly game of kill or be killed.
The below trailer is red band, it should go without saying this is NSFW.
The Belko Experiment hits theaters March 17, 2017, the same day as Beauty and the Beast. So if you don’t want to go the Disney route, you can go the literal exact opposite and do blood, guts, and terror.
