Are your passions a little on the geeky side? Did you see the latest Marvel or DC movie and you have some thoughts about it? Have you spent hours debating friends in Klingon? With the pop culture boom of the last decade, geek is in. Gone are the days of bullying someone for their passion. Geeky pop culture has become so big that it’s become a lucrative business that continually expands each year. Do you feel like you wanted to contribute to it? Here are a few tips on how start down that path.
Create a WordPress/Blog
One of the first things you need to be able to join a geek website is writing samples. Editors need to know how well you write and see how you use your sources (if any). One of the best ways you can do that is by starting a WordPress website or a blog. They’re a great way to keep you in the habit of writing consistently plus it’s an all access place to show your writing samples. Whether you’re an anime critic, comics expert or a gamer who loves the joy of Bingo Blogger, you can share your thoughts with the world.
Focus on Your Passion
Your passion is what brought you here so why say this? Well it’s because you’ll be able to stand out among many writers if you bring enthusiasm to your work. It doesn’t feel like work if you’re talking about the things you love, right? That aside, having knowledge in a particular area makes you more valuable than someone covering a broad range of topics. So if you have an incredible knowledge about Star Wars toys released in the 1980s, there are places out there interested in having pieces about it. Your knowledge is valuable.
The biggest thing about contributing to the world of geekdom is to have fun. For many, it’s a hobby to share our passions online after we work our butts off at our jobs. You may start off making little or no money in writing, podcasting, etc. If you want to make this into a full time job, then you need to put a lot of work into it – any free time you have should be dedicated to creating content. However, it’s important not to lose sight of why you wanted to do it in the first place. You love these properties! So remember self care, have fun and keep reaching for success!
