Fire will reign. On Monday, the official Twitter account for House of the Dragon released a slew of images from the inaugural table read! The Game of Thrones spin-off began production on the first season of the series.
House of the Dragon is based on the book Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin. It’s set a few hundred years prior to the events in Game of Thrones. Documenting the legendary Targaryen civil war, “Dance of the Dragons,” House of the Dragon follows the rule of King Viserys Targaryen (Paddy Considine) and his family in the Red Keep.
Matt Smith will portray his brother, Prince Daemon Targaryen, a dragonrider. Olivia Cooke will take on the role of Alicent Hightower, daughter of the Hand of the King. Emma D’Arcy will play Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, Viserys’ firstborn. Rhys Ifans has been cast as Otto Hightower, father of Alicent and Hand of the King to Viserys. Steve Toussaint will portray Lord Corlys Velaryon, also known as “The Sea Snake.”
Additionally, Eve Best will take on the role of Princess Rhaenys Velaryon, the wife of The Sea Snake. Lastly, Sonoya Mizuno will play Mysaria, who becomes an unlikely ally to Prince Daemon. Martin will serve as executive producer while Miguel Sapochnik and Ryan Condal will take up the mantle of co-showrunners. Sapochnik will also pull double duty as director.
Personally, I’m pumped for more stories in this universe. As long as the Two Who Shall Not Be Named aren’t involved, I’m peachy keen. This is such an expansive, diverse and rich realm. If Martin and HBO want to weave more tales in the A Song of Ice and Fire world, I’m game.
Below, you can take a gander at the images from the House of the Dragon table read. House of the Dragon is currently in production and slated to premiere on HBO in 2022.
