Hello, horror lovers! Welcome to another edition of Horror With a Side of Cheese. If you are new to the column, here’s the lowdown. I am on a search for the cheesiest horror movies ever made. I talk about my latest find on the first and third Friday of every month.

Additionally, I rate each film on a scale of one to five cheese slices. Several factors go into the rating, such as acting, plot, effects, dialogue and re-watchability. This edition’s movie may give you a chill. With winter winds beginning to blow, I am talking about the 1997 movie Jack Frost. Not to be confused with the family-friendly film of the same name that came out about a year later, starring Michael Keaton. Stick around to find out how many cheese slices I give this one.

About Jack Frost

A serial killer is on his way to his execution. Along the way, the vehicle wrecks, and Jack Frost (Scott MacDonald) perishes in a spray of genetic material. Everyone assumes Frost is dead; however, he has been transformed into an evil snowman bent on revenge.

After his transformation, Frost hunts for the person responsible for putting him on death row. As he goes about his journey, anyone in his path is fair game. Will someone find a way to stop the vengeful snowman, or will he accomplish his mission, taking out as many people as possible?

Jack Frost stares at the camera as someone walk behind him.

Jack Frost also stars Christopher Allport, Eileen Seeley, Stephen Mendel, Rob LaBelle, F. William Parker and Jack Lindine. Michael Cooney and Jeremy Paige wrote the story, and Cooney directed it.

This film has a six percent Tomatometer Score and a 30 percent Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Trigger Warning

There is one trigger warning for this film. In one scene, the snowman commits SA against a young woman. To make matters worse, the appendage is an icicle.

My Thoughts

In theory, this movie should be an epic cheesy horror. It’s a killer snowman! It lives up to that idea in some aspects, while in others, it fails.

In terms of story, Jack Frost is pretty straightforward. I compare it to Child’s Play in that a notorious killer dies and possesses an inanimate object. The horror movie trope of a murderous snowman is one that I have always found intriguing. This movie holds as far as the story goes—no cheese in that aspect.

The dialogue is where much of the cheesiness comes into this film. Frost seems to have a quippy comeback for every moment. The thing is, some of the comments aren’t so much quippy as they are ridiculous. One of the most memorable lines comes after Frost asks someone for a cigarette before using an ax to murder the person. He then says, “Gosh. I only axed you for a smoke.” In another instance, Frost attacks someone with an icicle and says, “Listen, I got a point I’d like to make!”

The next aspect I want to look at is the effects. In full-body and distance shots, the snowman appears relatively realistic. However, quite a few scenes focus on a single snow arm. These scenes are hilarious. The snowy appendage looks like a stuffed sack. There are a few decent effects with blood and severed heads, but overall, the effects add to the cheesiness.

Jack Frost towers behind a woman sitting in a chair.

As for the acting, it matches the rest of the movie. It won’t win any awards, but it is perfect for a film like Jack Frost. As with most cheesy films, the acting is campy and over-the-top.

Finally, let’s get into the re-watchability factor. I am not opposed to watching this movie again, but I will also not race to do so. It was ok, not great. I place this one on my list of worst Christmas/winter movies.
