Another year – another horror video game list to enjoy. We all know the fall weather gives us the perfect opportunity to cuddle under a warm blanket and spend some time in our most terrifying nightmares. Of course, the blanket is really a security measure to ensure that the big old bogeyman can’t get us. But really, the rush of being scared while simultaneously knowing you are absolutely safe will never get old. This is our fifth year putting this list together, and we are beyond excited that we still have plenty of games to choose from. Where will your horror-filled month begin?
Don’t see your favorite horror game? Chances are we covered it on a previous list. Be sure to check out parts one, two, three and four!

The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me
We are kicking this year’s horror video game list with one of our favorite franchises, Supermassive Games‘ The Dark Pictures Anthology. The latest addition is The Devil in Me. Based on H.H. Holmes and his murder house during the Chicago World Fair. This new story follows the same game mechanics as the previous installments, where the players’ choices and what they find and leave behind can change the story. Supermassive continues to shock and surprise us with every new evolution of these games.
The Dark Pictures Anthology: The Devil in Me is available on PC through Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
Resident Evil 4 Remake
Did you think we would go another year without talking about Capcom‘s Resident Evil franchise? This year we had to include the Resident Evil 4 Remake. This installment might just be the best one they have ever released, and the remake takes what we love and puts a shiny new coat of paint on it. Leon heads off in search of the president’s missing daughter, only to find himself waist-deep in mystery, drama and some terrifying zombies. It has everything we love about the franchise and more.
Resident Evil 4 Remake is availble on PC through Steam, PS4, PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Who doesn’t love this franchise? The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has stood the test of horror time and seen a resurgence in recent years. Sumo Digital took our beloved murder family and brought them to life in a 4vs3 horror survival game. Whether you are on the family or survivor side, there is tons of stuff to do in each match. With the game’s recent release, we are hopeful that new survivors, killers and maps will be here to shake up our lives.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is available on PC through Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
The Forest
Sometimes something as easy as being stranded on your own is terrifying enough. But add in terrifying cannibals, and a mysterious forest, and things will never be the same. Endnight Games‘ The Forest is one of those games that seem like it isn’t going to outright terrify you, but then catch you out of left field. Players will need to be quick on their feet as they struggle to survive and avoid finding themselves heading down a path that will certainly lead to their death.
The Forest is available on PC through Steam and PS4.

Alan Wake
Chances are, if you are a fan of horror video games, you have at least heard of Remedy Entertainment‘s Alan Wake. And if you haven’t had the chance to check it out, now is the time. Especially since we are finally able to return to the franchise this year with Alan Wake 2. Players control Alan, a writer in search of his wife, who finds himself in a mysterious town and an even more mysterious situation. It was one of the first games that truly made us question if we really knew what was going on, and we couldn’t love it more.
Alan Wake is available on PC through Steam, PS4, PS5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and the Nintendo Switch.
I’m on Observation Duty
This horror video game might not scream “scare your pants off” right away, give I’m on Observation Duty some time. Notovia and Dreamloop Games took a simple idea of finding the difference in a picture and made it something completely unique. Players are responsible for keeping an eye on surveillance footage in order to spot anomalies. Let one go for too long, and the results could be dangerous. And if you manage to beat this one, they have five more to enjoy.
I’m on Observation Duty is available on PC through Steam.

Welcome to Kowloon
There is nothing that we love more than indie horror video games. A1esska, Notex, N4bA and Admia’s Welcome to Kowloon comes in at less than $10 and is worth every single penny paid. Players find themselves looking for housing in an area called Kowloon, but the further they explore, the more mysterious and terrifying it becomes. It is a walking simulator that is built with a single job – to absolutely terrify. Can they find their way out? Or will players be lost in Kowloon forever?
Welcome to Kowloon is availble on PC through Steam.
Fran Bow
Killmonday Games‘ Fran Bow is one of those games that both unsettle you while also pulling at your heartstrings. The point-and-click psychological horror game features a story packed with mystery. The story follows Fran as she deals with her struggles with mental health and a very unfair destiny. What really made us fall in love (and stay in love so many years later) is the art style used and how beautiful the world around Fran really is.
Fran Bow is available on PC through Steam, PS4, Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch.

Layers of Fear (2023)
Bloober Teams continues to show the gaming industry that they know how to create absolutely terrifyingly good horror video games. Layers of Fear is the sequel to the original Layers of Fear and Layers of Fear 2. It ties together the story of the artist, the actor and the never-before-told story about the writer. As players uncover the mystery, the world changes around them, and what they once believed to be true might just have been a lie all along. Trust no one, even yourself.

DREDGE
Not every horror video game needs to be terrifying to give us the spooky Halloween vibes. How about fishing in a world inspired by H.P. Lovecraft? This is why we love Black Salt Games‘ DREDGE. Players head out on fishing trips in mysterious places, bringing back even more terrifying and mysterious catches. Even those who don’t necessarily love to be terrified while gaming will find something to enjoy with this.
