Spooky season is underway, and one of my favorite ways to celebrate is with an eerie horror video game to get lost in. We suggest setting the mood with snacks, a big blanket and something to hide behind. So, whether you are looking to dive into a zombie-infested city, terrifying waters plagued with psychological horrors or nightmares from the past, we have something for everyone to enjoy.

Don’t see your favorite horror game? Chances are we covered it on a previous list. Be sure to check out parts one, two, three, four and five!

Still Wakes the Deep

Our first horror video game for this year is The Chinese Room and Secret Mode’s Still Wakes the Deep. This is The Chinese Room’s return to narrative horror, and it has been regarded as a masterpiece in horror and a must-play. Players find themselves on an offshore oil rig, fighting for their lives against the surrounding horrors. This is the perfect game if you found yourself on North Sea TikTok.

Still Wakes the Deep is available to enjoy on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Little Nightmares

One of our favorite all-time video games and franchises is Tarsier Studios and Bandai Namco’s Little Nightmares. The dark platformer features an incredibly horrifying world to explore. Players lead Six through a ship built like a maze with just a tiny brass lighter to guide them. Every room is packed with puzzles to uncover and mysteries to enjoy.

Little Nightmares is available to play on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and the Nintendo Switch.

The Evil Within 2

The next video horror game on our list is Tango Gameworks and Bethesda Softworks’ The Evil Within 2. The second installment in this incredible horror franchise follows Detective Sebastian Castellanos. He has lost everything, most notably his daughter Lily. Players spend their time guiding him through his worst nightmares. This is a great video game, packed with jumpscares, puzzles and gore galore.

The Evil Within 2 can be found on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4 and Xbox Box One.

The Outlast Trials

Do you think you can last through hours of mind-numbing terrors with your friends by your side? Red Barrels’ The Outlast Trials isn’t for the faint of heart. This co-op survival horror is set in the era of the Cold War. Here, the Murkoff Corporation is testing on humans. Scary things are always better with friends; this is the perfect example. Too terrified to push forward? Someone in the group will drag you right along with them.

The Outlast Trials is available to play on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Visage

SadSquare Studio’s Visage is a psychological horror that puts players in the driver’s seat. It focuses on slowly building tension and fear through exploration. It gives players a false sense of calm and security as it builds toward terrifying horror. Each corner of this house has something that will bring chills, and uncovering the secrets doesn’t ease one’s mind. It’s a great horror video game to play alone on a dark, stormy night.

Visage is available to enjoy on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Alan Wake 2

Remedy Entertainment returns to its routes with Alan Wake 2. A string of murders threatens Bright Falls, and Saga Anderson might be the only one who can solve the mystery behind them. In another reality, Alan Wake is a writer trapped in a nightmare beyond our wildest dreams. Can both find a way to solve the mystery and return things to normal? It’s packed with both realistic and supernatural horrors, perfect for this time of year.

Alan Wake 2 is available to play on PC via the Epic Game Store, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Dead Space

Dead Space by Motive and EA Games isn’t entirely new. Initially released in 2008, players received an updated release last year that promises a more immersive experience. Players step into the shoes of Isaac Clarke, an everyman engineer on a mission to repair a mining ship. However, that is where things take a turn for the terrifying. After finding everyone on board dead and his beloved partner missing, Isaac must race against the clock to uncover the horrifying mystery.

Dead Space is available to enjoy on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Hunt: Showdown 1896

Are you looking for something still scary but with faster action multiplayer gameplay? Cytek’s Hunt: Showdown 1896 is what you need. Join your friends, or dive in on your own to fight back twisted monsters in the corrupted backwaters lost to history. Each match features a world filled with monsters and bounties. But they aren’t the only ones waiting. Other hunters are hiding in the brush, waiting for their moment to strike.

Resident Evil 2 Remake

Is it a horror video game list without Capcom’s most iconic horror franchise making the list? This year, we are highlighting the Resident Evil 2 Remake. Join Claire Redfield and Leon Kennedy as they uncover the corruption within Racoon City. From zombies around every corner to the terrifying Mr. X, a lot is waiting to scare you within this video game. The updated graphics, audio, viewpoint and expanded gameplay bring this story to a new level.

Resident Evil 2 Remake is available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and the Nintendo Switch.

Darkwood

Our final horror video game for this year is Acid Wizard Studio’s Darkwood. This open-world survival horror brings a new level to supernatural horror. Filled with Lovecraftian-inspired monsters and eeire characters, players will spend their days scavenging to survive and their nights hunkered down in their hideouts. The top-down perspective really had us spooked, along with their unique twist on hide-and-seek gameplay.

Darkwood is available to play on PC via Steam, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and the Nintendo Switch.
