Psychologist Dr. Larry Lewis gives his advice to Luke Skywalker about his father.
What do you do when you find out your father is Darth Vader, an evil mastermind and mass murderer? Dr. Larry Lewis gives some helpful perspective.
“Luke Skywalker is fighting for the rebels against the evil Empire, and against his nemesis, Darth Vader. Luke is told that his father was killed by Vader, but after an epic light saber duel, Vader reveals that he is Luke’s father. Luke is left in a state of shock and disbelief. What would a therapist say to someone rocked by this news?
Your father was a father in sperm donation only. He wasn’t a father in nurturing you to be a great young man. And that’s what we have to all understand. Just because somebody kicks in an egg or two or a wad of sperm doesn’t make them a father. It makes them the cause of the pregnancy.
Who raised you? Where did you get these great values from? That’s who you are, and that’s who you can choose to be. You could be the son of Satan, Hitler, Darth Vader, but do you feel you are powerless over evil or good inside of you. Many policemen have come from families where their fathers were criminals. But THEY are not criminals.
So it’s your choice. You want to spin in shame because Darth Vader was your father? Or do you want to show the world what true free will and choice can lift you to. And to become a model for freedom and liberty. It’s up to you, young Luke.”
