It’s finally here! After the announcement that Netflix would be creating an animated series based on the classic Castlevania video game franchise, many of us have been waiting patiently for some footage and a definite release date. We don’t have to wait any longer.
Not only did Netflix announce the release date, but they also gave us a teaser trailer, “Vengeance.” Season 1 Part 1 will premiere on July 7, 2017 with four 30-minute episodes. The series is written by famed comic book writer Warren Ellis (RED graphic novel, Dead Space) and it is being produced by Ellis, Kevin Kolde (Adventure Time), Fred Seibert (Adventure Time, The Fairly OddParents) and Adi Shankar (The Grey, Dredd).
Judging by the trailer alone, which is steeped in ‘80s gaming nostalgia, I could not be more excited to see this series. The art direction, the story which is based on Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, the voice actors, all of it is very much in the vein of the Castlevania games. Of course, we should assume that some changes will be made to the original story. Adi Shankar, in an interview with IGN, said that the series would be much like Game of Thrones so expect gore, epic battles, and probably some language as this will be an R-rated animated show.
Here is the official synopsis:
“Inspired by the classic video game series, Castlevania is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself. The animated series is from Frederator Studios, a Wow! Unlimited Media company, written by best-selling author and comic book icon Warren Ellis and executive produced by Warren Ellis, Kevin Kolde, Fred Seibert and Adi Shankar.”
