Steven Universe Future, the epilogue series to Steven Universe, debuts with back-to-back episodes on Cartoon Network December 7 at 8:00 p.m. (ET/PT).

They say: “After saving the universe, Steven is still at it, tying up every loose end. But as he runs out of other people’s problems to solve, he’ll finally have to face his own. Haunted by the past and lost in the present, Steven begins manifesting new, uncontrollable powers that the Crystal Gems have never seen from him before. What does it all mean, and what does Steven want for his future?”

The trailer (below) hints at Jasper as the season’s external villain, likely aided by Steven’s inner demons.

Steven Universe has won a number of prestigious awards for breaking barriers in representation and its consistent themes of diversity, inclusion, unconditional love and support. Rebecca Sugar‘s beloved show has tackled a variety of tricky subjects like survivors’ guilt, grief, abandonment, disillusionment, failure and so much more– all through a lens accessible to children.

The new series looks poised to continue that tradition, exploring the lasting psychological effects of trauma. Based on what they’ve done in the past, we can expect this exploration to be sensitive and honest, musical and entertaining.

Are you looking forward to Steven’s future?
