Will we finally see a hopeful Superman? According to star Henry Cavill in an interview with Entertainment Weekly via CBR, we will see a “true” Superman in Justice League. Can we truly look forward to a happy and hopeful boy scout in blue in the DCEU? I’ll believe it when I see it.

Since his appearance in Man of Steel, this iteration has been fairly depressing. With snapping Zod’s neck in his origin, destroying Metropolis killing thousands while punching Kryptonians around the city. And in Batman v Superman, he has a depressing montage of saving people. I would like to see him actually wanting to help and not look like it’s a burden to save everyone other than Lois Lane. According to Cavill, though, that’s about to change.

Geoff [Johns] and I have been delving into the history of the character to get to the core of who Superman is. This is the first time we see the true Superman. The Superman who is confident, and sure, and full of hope and joy.

What strikes me about this quote is that he’s working with DC CCO Geoff Johns, not director Zack Snyder. With Snyder’s vision, we saw a Christ-like figure, barring the burden of saving humanity. After the harsh reviews of BvS came out, the Snyders slyly tried to pin the blame on fans for not liking their vision with Deborah Snyder saying “people don’t like to see their heroes deconstructed”. To which I counter, what’s appealing about a depressed Superman in the first place? I digress, but, seeing as he’s is a part of this film, I’ll believe a joyful Superman when I see it. I guess he had to die to become happy? We’ll see!
