Helen Mirren has been Shazam-ed, and no, we’re not referring to the song app. As reported by Deadline, the prolific actress has signed on to portray the villain in DC’s Shazam: Fury of the Gods, the sequel to the adored 2019 film Shazam!

Mirren will play Hespera, a daughter of Atlas. Zachary Levi will reprise his role as the titular character, Shazam, while Rachel Zegler has also boarded the project. The team behind Shazam! is returning for the sequel. David F. Sandberg will helm the movie with a script penned by Henry Gayden

Now, Shazam: Fury of the Gods will continue to follow the adventures of teenager Billy Batson as he navigates high school while learning to utilize his unique powers. Batson can transform into his superpowered adult alter ego simply by reciting the word, “Shazam!” When in his superhero form, Shazam “is bestowed with the powers of six gods: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.”

Besides Levi, Zegler and Mirren; Adam BrodyJack Dylan GrazerMarta MilansAsher Angel and Faithe Herman round out the Shazam: Fury of the Gods cast.

Mirren’s storied career spans over five decades with her first on-screen role in 1967. She has been nominated three times for Academy Awards with The Madness of King GeorgeGosford Park and The Last Station. Mirren snagged a Best Actress Oscar in 2007 for her titular role in The Queen. She can be seen next in the upcoming flick F9 as Magdalene Shaw.

I’m so excited to have Mirren as the antagonist for Shazam: Fury of the Gods! She’s a titan among performers and I’ve no doubt she’ll be a world-class foe to Zachary Levi’s delightful hero.
