And the award for the best dad on television goes to  – Pedro Pascal. Today, during TLOU Day (The Last of Us Day), HBO Max and Naughty Dog dropped the first full-length trailer for the upcoming series. HBO’s The Last of Us follows the events of Naughty Dog’s first game. It introduces us to a zombie-filled world, found family and drama – so much drama. The series stars Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie, working alongside showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann.

The Last of Us follows Joel and Ellie, who live in a world devastated by an outbreak. The after-effects of a deadly fungus mutate those it infects into horrific monsters. But it quickly becomes clear, like in most zombie/monster media, that the absolute horror lies within how people pick up the pieces in the post-apocalyptic world. And this is exactly what the first trailer for the series is showing everyone. Instead of the scary monsters, it focuses on the ones who look like you and me.

The focus of The Last of Us trailer is on Joel and Ellie, giving us some of the best views of the two we have had so far set to Hank Williams‘ “Alone and Forsaken.” Through these clips, we can piece together what the world is like and how people choose to deal with the outbreak. The tone is dark and ominous, which is something we were expecting to see in this adaptation. The idea that the safety of not only Ellie but the people around him lies heavy on Joel’s shoulders is made perfectly clear.

As The Last of Us trailer comes to a close, we get some quick action shots and even a closer look at what the clickers will look like. And finally, in the end, we watch as Ellie and Joel head off alone on their journey. In under two minutes, this trailer has won us over and then some. It promises to bring us a post-apocalyptic world packed with monsters and the drama of people trying to claw themselves back from the brink of devastation.
