More Fire and Blood might be in HBO’s future. Variety reports the entertainment juggernaut could develop a Game of Thrones prequel series about Aegon’s Conquest, which zeroes in on Aegon the Conqueror’s seizing of Westeros. Development of the project is “being actively discussed,” according to Variety

We also learned HBO hopes to move forward into the development stages. Currently, the series doesn’t have a writer. There’s talk they might produce a feature film leading into the show; however, there are no concrete plans yet.

Aegon’s Conquest is chronicled in A Song of Ice and Fire scribe George R.R. Martin‘s Targaryen compendium Fire & Blood, which serves as the basis of HBO’s Game of Thrones prequel spin-off, House of the Dragon. Aegon the Conqueror and his sister-wives, Rhaenys and Visenya, seized control of Westeros with their dragons Balerion the Black Dread, Meraxes and Vhagar, respectively. House of the Dragon fans undoubtedly remember Vhagar from Season 1, when young Aemond Targaryen laid claim to the great winged beast on the heels of Laena Velaryon’s death.

During the Conquest, Aegon and his sister-wives conquered six of the seven Westerosi kingdoms. Dorne refused to cater to the Targaryens, culminating in unrest between the two nations down the line. Aegon became the first king of Westeros, thus launching the Targaryen dynasty, which lasted three centuries until its fall during Robert’s Rebellion.

House of the Dragon premiered on August 21, 2022, to rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. Season 1 boasts 10 episodes, with the finale laying the groundwork for the fabled Dance of the Dragons. Season 2, which will only have eight episodes, is currently in production and expected to premiere sometime in 2024. While the series doesn’t have a third-season renewal, there’s a good chance HBO will greenlight it.

HBO is looking to expand its Game of Thrones universe after the earth-shattering success of the flagship series. The potential spin-offs include the Corlys “The Sea Snake” Velaryon project, the Jon Snow series, a Dunk and Egg show, an animated project and a Princess Nymeria series. Martin took to his (not a) blog to reveal the following regarding this universe expansion:

“… Some of those are moving faster than others, as is always the case with development. None have been greenlit yet, though we are hoping… maybe soon. A couple have been shelved, but I would not agree that they are dead. You can take something off the shelf as easily as you can put it on the shelf. All the changes at HBO Max have impacted us, certainly.”

I love the idea of an Aegon the Conqueror series, so long as they don’t cast Henry Cavill as Aegon. Please, for the love of all that is holy, Internet — please stop suggesting him as an option. He’s an outstanding actor, but Aegon was younger than Henry when he became king.
