Unfortunately, we won’t see more of Anne Lister and Ann Walker living in domestic bliss. Deadline reports that HBO decided not to renew the LGBTQIA+ period drama Gentleman Jack for a third season. The second season of the series recently concluded in June.

According to Deadline, the show suffered under the weight of pandemic delays and by airing on low-traffic Monday nights. Additionally, Gentleman Jack is one of HBO’s lowest-rated original programs.

HBO made a statement to Deadline regarding the cancellation:

“HBO will not be moving forward with a third season of Gentleman Jack. When we began this journey more than five years ago, we knew the series’ creator Sally Wainwright had a uniquely compelling vision, and it’s been tremendously gratifying to see how Anne Lister’s journey has resonated with viewers.

We are incredibly grateful to Sally, the impeccable Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle, and the entire cast and crew for bringing Anne and Ann’s story to life. We’d also like to thank our partners at BBC and Lookout Point for their collaboration on two remarkable seasons.”

Wainwright and the writers utilized Anne Lister’s real-life diaries as the foundation for the series starring Jones as Anne and Rundle as Ann Walker. Throughout two seasons, we see Anne and Ann’s love story unfurl as they quietly marry and move to Shibden Hall. Season 2 charted their journey to becoming a power couple in Halifax.

The show also stars Gemma Whelan as Marian Lister, Gemma Jones as Aunt Lister and Timothy West as Jeremy Lister.

While Season 2 was a bit disjointed and messy compared to its predecessor, I loved watching Suranne Jones and Sophie Rundle onscreen. Their chemistry is out of this world. Plus, it’s common for any series to have an off-kilter season. I believe Gentleman Jack deserves another season to flesh out these characters and their stories.
