Hayao Miyazaki, writer/director of some of the most moving and beautiful animated films, was awarded an honorary Oscar last weekend at the 2014 Governors Ball.

He won an Oscar in 2003 for Spirited Away but didn’t attend the awards show that year to protest The United States involvement in the Iraq war.

Miyazaki is the creator of Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle, and The Wind Arises, just to name a few.

Personally, I love him because he writes strong female protagonists! As my little sis’ Constance Dolph put it “San from Princess Mononoke is so freakin cool. uuuuggggghhhh, like who doesn’t want to be raised by wolves to become an amazing fighter and forest protector hero. She is so independent and has a no bullshit attitude!”

I’m bummed out that this didn’t happen during the regular Oscar telecast but hopefully they’ll make mention or show a montage of his lovely movies.

Here’s Miyazaki’s speech from last Saturday November 8th, 2014…
