The cover of Hawkeye: Bishop Takes King has a girl with dark hair, a purple shirt and purple sunglasses aiming a bow and arrow.

Thank you to Marvel Press for sending me a copy of Hawkeye: Bishop Takes King in exchange for an honest review.

Kate Bishop, the younger, cooler Hawkeye, is still figuring out what it means to be a superhero. But when she stops a minor crime and rescues the unexpectedly cute and charming Milo, she takes it as a win. The only problem? They mix up their bags, and his happens to contain a dangerous book full of powerful secrets.

It’s also a book New York City’s most notorious villain, Kingpin, would kill to get his hands on. Now Kate is on the run, desperately searching for Milo and the secrets he holds. She’ll need all of her skills — and the help of a few super friends — to get herself out of the mystery she stumbled into.

Hawkeye fans, rejoice! Hawkeye: Bishop Takes King is a fun standalone adventure perfect for fans of the comics or the show. Even Marvel newcomers can dive right into Ashley Poston’s new novel. This is also the first in a Women of Marvel series, so get excited for more adventures soon.

For true Marvel fans, there are plenty of references to other characters and events. Hawkeye: Bishop Takes King doesn’t follow the canon of the Disney+ show, so Kate crosses paths with Ms. Marvel and Spider-Man. She also spends plenty of time with her best friend, America Chavez, a character I adore. Their interactions were realistic and fun, and they’re perfectly written teenage besties.

Poston also successfully captured Kate’s snark and sass. She’s fun, self-deprecating and truly likable. Kate is, by turns, tough and vulnerable. Her witty comebacks serve as good comic relief for a surprisingly dark and twisted plot. The banter is natural, especially in Kate’s interactions with Clint Barton, the original Hawkeye.

Hawkeye: Bishop Takes King is also an ode to the power of books. In addition to the literal magic power the dangerous book possesses, Poston’s plot makes it clear she’s a literature lover. The book in question is part of a series Kate adored as a child; her fond memories of her mother stem from reading them together. There’s also a group of hilarious tweens who obsess over books and are reading a new Percy Jackson installation in every scene. This is truly a book for book lovers.

As a whole, Hawkeye: Bishop Takes King is a fun, fast-paced mystery for Marvel fans and newbies alike. Check it out if you love sassy banter and rapid-fire action scenes, then keep an eye out for the next installment in the series.

Hawkeye: Bishop Takes King comes out on October 3 and is available for preorder from your local independent bookstore or Bookshop.org.
