Hello, my lovelies! Welcome back to another edition of Underrated Horror Movie of the Month! Today we’re taking a look at Hansel & Gretel Get Baked, a 2013 release. This movie sounds cheesy, and it is, but it’s also awesome! Hold on to your hats as we dive into this crazy film.
About the Hansel & Gretel Get Baked
The first thing you need to know is that yes, the word “baked” in the title is indeed a double entendre. When the movie opens, Gretel (Molly C. Quinn) and her boyfriend, Ashton (Andrew James Allen), are … well, getting baked in her room. The marijuana they’re smoking is a special blend called “Black Forest,” which only comes from one supplier.
The person who produces this blend is an older lady named Agnes (Lara Flynn Boyle), who lives in Pasadena. After Gretel’s brother, Hansel, comes home, Ashton decides to get some more Black Forest while Gretel makes cookies.

Unfortunately, their dealer, Manny (Eddy Martin), is out so Ashton goes directly to Agnes. This turns out to be a massive mistake. Agnes is actually a witch who steals youth from her customers and uses it to make herself young.
After hours go by and Ashton still hasn’t returned, Gretel decides to go in search of him. There’s a rift between Manny and the gang he usually gets his supply from. When the leader of the gang finds out that Manny has been getting Black Forest from Agnes and selling it to his customers, he becomes enraged.
This leads to Manny, gang leader Jorge (Joe Ordaz) and other gang members going to Agnes’ house to … dissuade her from selling in the area. Needless to say, Jorge and his gang are no match for a powerful witch like Agnes.
When Gretel goes looking for Ashton, she knows something isn’t right. Eventually, Hansel searches for Gretel and they all end up in a tangled web of evil built by Agnes. Can they survive and keep the witch from consuming them? Will Gretel find Ash alive? Can Hansel get to Gretel in time?
Hansel & Gretel Get Baked was written by David Tillman and directed by Duane Journey.
My Thoughts
Is this movie the most in-depth film you’ll ever watch? Not even close. However, I was expecting a horror-comedy full of nonsense and ridiculous humor. I had no hope for the acting and expected overly dark, poorly filmed-scenes. Instead, I was greeted with amazing atmosphere, awesome acting and decent effects.

Again, was it perfect? No, the plot is not completely fleshed out and some moments are ridiculous. BUT, if you’re looking for a fun watch that has some pretty good scare moments and a brand-new take on Hansel and Gretel, this is it.
Throughout the years, the story of Hansel and Gretel has been redone over and over again. Some have stuck to the classic version, while others have tried to modernize it. There are versions that depict the brother/sister duo as warriors, some that show them as children and still others that turn one or the other magical. However, I can confidently say that there is nothing else like Hansel & Gretel Get Baked in film form.
Whenever I’m in the mood for something easy to follow while still giving me that creepy vibe, this is the movie I turn to.
The biggest issue I have is a few things that transpire that are irrelevant to the plot. I have seen reviews that criticize the fact that the plot isn’t deep. In my opinion, it’s exactly the type of plot that this type of movie needs. Not every horror film can be a psychologically twisting experience. Some horror stories are meant to be nothing more than a fun scare.
