WARNING! SPOILERS BELOW!
Hulu released a first look trailer for The Handmaid’s Tale season two, Sunday. It is dark and creepy and gives us a glimpse of the horrors awaiting Offred (Elisabeth Moss) in the Colonies.
Showrunner, Bruce Miller confirmed in an interview with EW this week, that the second season would focus on the Colonies and on refugees who have escaped Gilead. We see both of those things in this trailer. People in rags, their faces covered, walk the wasteland we can assume are the toxic Colonies. And, we see nooses hanging in front of Moira (Samira Wiley). That’s an interesting image, as she’s escaped to Canada where we think there is nobody being killed. When you look close, they’re not real. They must be some kind of tribute to the dead left behind or a political statement about the horrors across the border.
Offred is pictured with a mask on her face that we’ve seen before on Ofglen (Alexis Bledel) when she was taken by the Eyes. I can’t see an outcome where Offred doesn’t at least make a pitstop in the Colonies, but she is pregnant, and Nick is an Eye. Maybe she’ll avoid that fate. We do see them together briefly in this trailer.
The rest of the trailer is full of the haunting images of Gilead that we’ve come to expect. There is memory, there are handmaids in silent circles, there is open resistance, a scene in the woods where Commander Waterford (Joseph Fiennes) seems to be doing his own dirty work, running and fire. Bring on season two!
Whatever is silenced will clamor to be heard.
The Handmaid’s Tale season 2 will start streaming on Hulu on April 25th.
