It Has Begun

For those of us familiar with the lore of the HALO versus Covenant conflict, there’s a sinking feeling of foreboding in our stomachs as the war begins on Reach, the stronghold of humanity, in HALO Season 2 Episode 4, “Reach.”

The attack catches many by surprise. Not the ONI elites, of course. Ackerson (Joseph Morgan) and his cronies are long gone before the real fighting starts, writing off the planet as a regrettable casualty of the war. But Silver Team’s members are all over the place. Will they come together in time?

Silver Team

When last we saw him, John (Pablo Schreiber) was in the chapel with Perez (Cristina Rodlo). Will they make it back to FLEETCOM HQ together safely? How can a pellet-less Spartan identify with a through-and-through human Marine going through the stages of shock? Can she keep up and learn from his mission focus?

Riz (Natasha Culzac) was dining and chilling with Louis (Marvin Jones III) and Danilo (Christian Ochoa Lavernia) before the explosions started. Can the three of them run the gauntlet of Covenant forces to reunite with FLEETCOM’s troops?

Vannak’s (Bentley Kalu) been the most relaxed of the team since Sanctuary. Just another day in his life, enjoying his new interest in wildlife. It’s such a contrast with his efficient battle mode.

And who knows where Ackerson’s sent Kai (Kate Kennedy)?

When Heroes Rise Up

These are the times when real heroism shines through. Even futile heroism — maybe especially futile heroism — lights a beacon when hope is lost.

Who will step up in the darkness to drive back the shadows?

The most likely candidate is Admiral Keyes (Danny Sapani). The former Mr. Doctor Halsey has sacrificed a lot in the interest of following the chain of command, but his response to Ackerson’s suggestion that he join the higher-ups in evacuating Reach in HALO Season 2 Episode 3 “Visegrád” earmarks him as the most dangerous of leaders — an optimist.

The Survivors

And we can’t forget Dr. Halsey (Natascha McElhone) and Soren (Bokeem Woodbine), locked up together in the abandoned dungeons of the ONI headquarters.

Both are survivors of the highest order, defeating all odds that would overwhelm most people on moral or physical grounds. Taken another way, they are simply too single-minded to die. Will their presence tip the scales for humanity?
