The original The Exorcist released in 1973 and quickly became a sensation in the horror genre. It was the highest-grossing R-rated horror movie of all time bringing in a whopping $232.91 million total at the Box Office. The initial domestic run alone brought in $66.3 million. It held this position until 2017 when IT Chapter One grossed an unheard-of $327.48 million domestically. The Exorcist was also the second most popular film of 1973.
There are now rumors of a new movie in the franchise being produced by Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Productions. Among the rumors is that Halloween director David Gordon Green is in talks to direct.

While representatives at Blumhouse had no comment, it would make sense. Green has already worked closely with Blumhouse to create the latest trilogy in the Halloween franchise. After being dormant for quite some time, horror fan’s love for Halloween reignited with a fierce intensity when Halloween 2018 hit theaters. There are currently two sequels on the way, Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends. Green not only directed all three of these movies, but he also co-wrote and produced.
The story of The Exorcist began as a novel written by author William Peter Blatty. The novel was originally published in 1971 by Harper which is a part of the global publishing company HarperCollins. It was then turned into a film in 1973 under the direction of William Friedkin. The screenplay for this film was written by William Peter Blatty, the author of the novel. The film was so popular that it spawned three sequels and a television series. Now, a possible fourth sequel.
The facts are few and far between at this point, but hopefully, the rumors will be confirmed. Speculation abounds as to the content of the film. Will it be a reboot? A true sequel? Will the stories from the previous sequels be taken into account?
