Remember that Sony leak that happened? Well, Wall Street Journal is reporting some some interesting news on the Spider-Man front, about where the studio is at with the franchise and what they are thinking, with internal emails as well as extensive discussions between people as high up as Kaz Hiraj and Robert Iger.

The first thing that’s apparent is that they are reaching for anything right now, doing their damnedest to figure out the best direction to take the franchise, especially since it performed so poorly at the box office earlier this year. It seems as if they are scrambling, reaching for anything to help. Along with partnering with Marvel, they also considered an animated comedy produced by The Lego Movie team of Chris Miller and Phil Lord as well as plans for a female-led Amazing Spider-Man spinoff from Sony Pictures Co-Chair Amy Pascal.

In an October 30th email to Amy Pascal, Sony Pictures President Doug Belgrad talks about a possible scenario with Marvel producing “a new trilogy of Spider-Man movies while Sony retains creative control, marketing and distribution.”

The emails also confirmed that “Marvel wanted to include Spider-Man in its planned third Captain America movie,” though those talks eventually broke down.

Sony is now planning a “Spidey” summit in January to discuss all future plans. The Sinister Six movie as well as the Venom movie are still slated for production, though there’s no news on either.
