Hollywood and the casino industry share a lot of common ground. They’re both about presentation, glitz, illusion, and momentary enchantment, but most importantly, they’re all about money. Don’t let actors fool you, movies don’t get made due to any sort of artistic drive, they get made for a return on investment.

Just look at what studios are putting out, it’s not that they love superhero and spectacle movies, they’re made because there’s a market for them. Today, if you want to seek out something of quality and substance you turn to independent cinema, movies you can find on streaming platforms. And if you’re in the mood to watch something casino-related; we’ve got you covered.

Nowadays, people prefer to do their gambling on their phones, but that wouldn’t make for an exciting movie, now, would it? However, ease of use and the perks that online casinos offer, make it difficult for their land-based counterparts to compete.

Online casinos have tons of fantastic advantages, and the casino games are probably their biggest one. For example, if you access online casino games at Casimba, you will see that their game library is vast and there are plenty of them to choose from. They are optimized for mobile use and can be played at any time and place.

Now, let’s take a look at some great casino movies.

The Cooler

Featuring a career-best performance from Alec Baldwin, one that landed him his only Oscar nomination, he plays an old school Vegas casino boss who believes in superstitions and employs William H. Macy as a Cooler, which is a gambling jinx. When you’re on a hot streak, Macy’s character comes around to pass on his bad luck and end your winning ways.

However, when a love interest (Maria Bello) enters the picture, Macy’s character’s luck begins to change, much to the dissatisfaction of his boss, who depends on his special talents. Released in 2003, this drama wasn’t a hit at the box office, but it was one with critics.

Owning Mahowny

2003 just may have been the best year ever for casino movies, as another classic was released in the twelve-month span as our listing above. This Canadian film is based on the amazing true story of a Brian Molony, an employee of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce, who embezzled over $10 million to feed his gambling habit.

Robert Ebert named it one of the best films of that year and it has two great performances by two magnificent actors that are no longer with us, John Hurt and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Going a few years back, and into the late 90s, we find a very underrated Mike Hodges gem. This British neo-noir is great if you want to learn about the inner workings of a small-time casino, and what exactly the position of Croupier consists of.

Clive Owen is terrific in the role of an aspiring writer; whose career is at a stand-still, so he seeks employment in the casino industry. It’s a shame that he was denied an Oscar nomination due to the film being shown on Dutch television.
