Praise be. The Handmaid’s Tale season two is drawing near and Entertainment Weekly got their hands on first look photos and some tasty info about the sophomore season. One thing is for sure. Based on comments from showrunner Bruce Miller and the photos that were released, Gilead is getting even darker.

Miller revealed in an interview with EW that season two will go on to “explore the lives of the refugees who’ve been able to escape Gilead as well as those who have been exiled to the Colonies, the polluted and contaminated areas of North America.” This is great. We can assume that we’ll see a fair amount of Moira (Samira Wiley) in Canada, so that’s no surprise. But it is very exciting. And, we all want to know what the Colonies look like. And, given that Offred (Elisabeth Moss) was carted away by the eyes at the end of season one, we can assume that even if she’s being saved, she’ll make a pitstop in the Colonies. One of the photos seems to depict a group of exiles at the Colonies. It looks bleak.

That’s not to say that the other photos are sunshine and rainbows. In fact, they’re all blood and blackness. One is of Offred covered in blood from the neck down. It doesn’t look like her blood, and her hair is short, so I’m banking on that being a flashback image like those we’ve become accustomed to in this series. I’d love to see that part of her past. The other is of what is clearly a handmaid funeral. It’s creepy and the costume design is fittingly haunting. The question is, which handmaid? It’s likely Janine (Madeline Brewer). After the handmaids’ refusal to stone her, we can assume it will still be taken care of… but who knows.
