Female Gaze: GILDA, Glenn Ford and the End of World War II

Questions of feminism in classic Hollywood cinema are a tricky, tricky beast. In fact, it’s easy to lean on how problematic some of these films are. In my new video series, Are You a Bad Girl, I’m examining these fascinating questions. How do movies like Gilda, as well as other works from the Golden Age of Hollywood hold up when examined through not only a historical lens, but through a female gaze?

In today’s (Introductory!) installment I dive into the 1946 film noir Gilda, the movie’s stars Rita Hayworth and Glenn Ford, the femme fatale as a character archetype as well as how the film fits into the complicated post World War II home front in the United States.
