It’s official! The Gifted will return to Fox for season 2! Fox made the announcement at the Television Critics’ Association winter press tour on Thursday. According to Entertainment Weekly, the show was ranked the #3 best new drama series with an average of 8.3 million viewers. And is most popular with audiences between the ages of 18 – 49. Matt Nix serves as writer and executive producer with Lauren Shuler Donner, Simon Winberg, Jeph Loeb, and Jim Chory

The freshman season brought Marvel fans another X-Men related universe. FX’s Legion is also set in the X-Men universe, but in the past. The Gifted centers around the Strucker family whose lives are turned upside down when Reed (Stephen Moyer) and Caitlin (Amy Acker) discover their teenage children have mutant abilities. They are forced to go on the run from Sentinel Services led by Agent Jace Turner (Coby Bell). The Struckers find help from the Mutant Underground, led by mutants John Proudstar/Thunderbird (Blair Redford), Marcos Diaz/Eclipse (Sean Teale), and Lorna Dane/Polaris (Emma Dumont). The Strucker children, Lauren (Natalie Alyn Lind) and Andy (Percy Haynes White) have proven to more powerful than their parent imagined.

The second season could be more exciting with better special effects after the Disney purchase of Fox Television. And who knows? We might see some of the X-Men we are more familiar with. In the latest episode, there was mention of the Hellfire Club, easter eggs about Magneto and Emma Frost. Who knows what kind of goodies Nix will have in store for the next season? And how many more “X” words can he find to use in the titles?

The Gifted season one finale airs Monday January 15 on Fox!
