We got a lot of exciting Ghostbusters: Afterlife plot details from director  Jason Reitman‘s interview with Vanity Fair a few days ago. Today we got the first trailer and it is certainly a different vibe than the last two Ghostbusters films. That’s not necessarily a bad thing.

We learned from Reitman that the story in Ghostbusters: Afterlife involves Callie (Carrie Coon) and her two kids, Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) and Trevor (Finn Wolfhard). Callie inherits her father’s house in Oklahoma. Callie’s father is a mystery to the family. Reitman says, “As the family arrives at an old farm, they begin to discover their connection to the original Ghostbusters. Trevor and Phoebe are about to find out who their grandfather was and whether they’re ready to pick up the proton pack themselves.”

The ghostbusting events of 1984 are known in this world as the Manhattan Crossrip. Many folks have forgotten those events or consider them a myth. Except for Paul Rudd‘s character, teacher Mr. Grooberson. When Phoebe and Trevor uncover some of their grandfather’s stuff including a PKE meter and the Ecto-1, Mr Grooberson is there to help.

In the trailer, we see Callie moving to Oklahoma with her two kids. She’s fallen on hard times. The kids don’t know much about their grandfather except that he owned the mansion where they now live. The kids go exploring in their new digs and find all of their grandfather’s ghostbusting supplies although they really don’t know what they are until Mr. Grooberson tells them about the Manhattan Crossrip. The kids even find their granddad’s old ghostbusters jumpsuit — it’s Spengler’s. Dr. Egon Spengler’s to be specific.

There’s also a lot of weird stuff going on in this tiny town in Oklahoma – earthquake like activity, noises……. green stuff. The ghost action in the trailer has a definite Stranger Things vibe and I’m not just saying that because Wolfhard is in the film. A lot of the scenes have the kids in them with their friends trying to figure out the mystery of the equipment and why the town has weird stuff going on. This looks to be, from this trailer, a film about a family trying to find joy and get connection back. We don’t know why Egon was not there for his daughter but we’re sure to find out.

There’s not a lot of comedy that you would expect from a Ghostbusters film in this trailer and that’s not to say there won’t be. This is just the first trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife and we know that there are some cameos from the original cast. We’re still very much all in. Check out the trailer and tell us what you think.
