Reservation Dogs stars Paulina Alexis, Devery Jacobs, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, and Lane Factor. In the teaser, the foursome are spray painting graffiti on the side of a building. They create the world “skoden.” Skoden is the term, “let’s go then” all in one word. It just goes to show you that these kids are just being kids … right?
The Reservation Dogs pilot premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last month. The cast joined creator Harjo to introduce the the series and answer a few questions. The Indigenous comedy is the first of its kind, featuring an all Native cast, directors, writers, and most of the crew was Native as well. Something Jacobs said she’s never experienced before. “It was the first time I had ever experienced the feeling of home on set and community and the fact that it was our space that we were walking into,” Jacobs said. “This one was by far the most…Indigenous sets I’d ever been a part of.”
Harjo went on to say that Reservation Dogs portrays Native people in a honest way. “As far as showing what Native people are like, we’re funny, we’re sad, we’re depressing, we’re interesting, we’re quirky, we’re everything. That shouldn’t be a radical thing that they’re showing us as human beings but it’s very radical and it’s about time in 2021. We’ve been a part of cinema from the very beginning, and we’ve never been portrayed in a realistic way. And it’s happening now and it’s … beautiful.”
The series was shot in Harjo’s home state of Oklahoma and features many of his friends, family, and long time fans. Check out the Graffiti teaser below.
Reservation Dogs premieres exclusively on FX on Hulu on August 9.
