Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. Now, this not only includes fictional female characters in geeky media, but creators as well. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for kids to have said example to follow.

Lauren Sinclair

Fast Facts

Lauren and Kieran going fighting in Purple Hyacinth.

Officer Lauren Sinclair is a member of the Ardhalis Police Department and main protagonist of Purple Hyacinth. Ten years before the start of the series, both of her parents and a close friend were killed. The bombing took place during an event at the Allendale Train Station. Lauren’s care fell to her uncle, Tristan Sinclair, the Chief of Police. While living under his roof, Lauren honed her skills in investigation. But she had another trick up her sleeve. She has a knack for understanding when people are lying to her. Using these skills, she joined the police with one goal in mind: to get justice for her family and friends against the Phantom Scythe.

Lauren begins her climb up from patrol officer to investigator before losing her cool. While questioning Tim Sake about his connection to the bombing, she can tell he is lying. For her insubordination, she is demoted back to patrol officer and told to leave the case alone. She agrees officially, but on her own she continues to keep track of it. One night she is called in to help with a murder investigation to learn that the assassin is none other than the Phantom Scythe’s Purple Hyacinth, also known as Kieran White. She eventually catches up with him, but instead of turning him over, the two strike a deal. Both want to bring Phantom Scythe to an end, and they can only do so together.

With this new partnership, Lauren begins to uncover more secrets behind the organization. Under the name Lune, Lauren and Kieran search out information by night and then secretly provide it to the police. The police, while happy they can finally arrest these dangerous people, are angry that someone else is getting it done first. Lauren’s own friends are sent on a witch hunt to uncover exactly who Lune is. The two continue to work together regardless of the threats, and Lauren learns that one of the men they are tracking has connections to her past.

After Harry Anslow is arrested, Lauren decides to pay him a visit in prison to question him further on the subject. But before she can, Kieran breaks in, killing everyone connected to Phantom Scythe and the prison guards. Feeling betrayed by his actions even though he was only following Phantom Scythe’s orders, Lauren breaks her agreement with him. She vows to continue on by herself but realizes that Kieran isn’t that easy to get rid of. She returns to work only to learn that Kieran has joined the force as well. He explains to her that Phantom Scythe is interested in taking Lune down  and has tasked him with infiltrating the station to learn more.

The Real Deal

Lauren Sinclair is the real deal, end of story. She is determined to uncover the mysteries behind both her parents’ and friend’s deaths, along with bringing an end to Phantom Scythe. She is tough as nails and can hold her own in a fight. The chase and fight scene between Lauren and Kieran in episode two, “Somber Silhouette,” is by far one of my favorites. She trained herself in the 10 years following the bombing, all in an attempt to bring justice for those lost.

But she isn’t just skilled in a fight or with weapons. Lauren is smart. Even outside of her ability to know when people around her are lying, she is a great investigator. She uses these abilities to help track down and conduct research on members of Phantom Scythe so the information can be used by the police to arrest them. But regardless of the risks she takes, Lauren is fiercely dedicated to her friends and those who work alongside her. She risks her own life working with Kieran, but makes him swear that no harm will come to those around her.

Why She Matters

Lauren and Kieran going head to head in Purple Hyacinth.

So why does Lauren matter? She isn’t just a role model because she is strong and smart. It is also because of how dedicated she can be. She has spent the better part of her life working to bring an end to Phantom Scythe. While at times she may seem a bit overzealous, she understands how important it is for her to succeed. Everything Lauren does is to protect those around her and the people of Ardhalis.

She continues to use her strengths and investigative abilities to uncover the mysteries hidden in the darker corners of Ardhalis. Her agreement to work alongside Kieran, even though she knows who he is, shows just how far she is willing to go to set things right. You never know what odd scheme she might come up with next. But in the end it is all in order to get the slip on a bad guy.

So be like Lauren, hone your skills, be tough as nails, and remain fiercely dedicated to your family and friends.
