I don’t think anyone is prepared for what’s about to happen on the Agents of SHIELD season five finale. Appropriately titled “The End,” the executive producers have admitted to writing this episode as a series finale. So what does this mean for the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents? Will Coulson live? Will Avengers: Infinity War affect the finale? Let’s recap how they got here. A lot happened this season!
Back in season four, Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) made a deal with the Ghost Rider. Coulson occupied the Ghost Rider to take down AIDA in exchange for the alien technology that brought Coulson back to life. So now he’s dying. He told the group and has accepted his fate. Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet) and Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) on the other hand are determined to save him.
Season five began in the future. Daisy is known as the Destroyer of Worlds and being blamed for the destruction of the Earth. She was sold in to slavery to the Kree leader Kasius and fitted with a Inhuman power inhibitor. The team discovered they were trapped in a time loop that always ends in Earth’s destruction. Future YoYo (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) told her past self that the only way to break the loop is to let Coulson die.

Episode 100
The team returned to their time with an unexpected guest. Deke Shaw (Jeff Ward) is from the future and reluctantly helped the team get back…he also sold Daisy into slavery. They were determined to find a way to break the loop, but they were the most wanted people on the planet. The people looking for S.H.I.E.L.D. also caused an explosion that opened up a rift between dimensions. It was during this time that the show celebrated the 100th episode by bringing back a old friend from episode one. Deathlok/Mike Peterson (J. August Richards) returned to help Coulson contain the rift. And to witness the LONG AWAITED nuptials of the show’s favorite couple, Leopold Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) and Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge).
The mood changed when Fitz went full on HYDRA and forcibly removed Daisy’s inhibitor. He did so because she was the only one with the power to close the rift. Daisy locked him up, but YoYo and Mrs. Fitz broke him out. YoYo and Jemma came to the conclusion that they were invincible because YoYo saw herself in the future. And Jemma…well, it turns out that Deke is the FitzSimmons’ grandson; meaning they survive the Earth’s destruction as well. Not only did they defy Daisy’s orders, but they locked up Mack in Fitz’s place. Not a good move for YoYo. Mack began to question his relationship with YoYo.
In other couple news, Philinda is officially a thing. May told Coulson that she loved him. Coulson kissed May….while being shot at. But! He’s dying! And then there’s Deke and Daisy. After Deke got shot…saving Daisy, he revealed to Mack his love for Daisy. Since then he’s been acting like a fool around her. She doesn’t know yet, but I doubt it’s mutual. Deke annoys Daisy too much.

HYDRA Returns
General Hale (Catherine Dent) led the search for SHIELD. Hale took General Talbot (Adrian Pasdar) and tortured him into tell her everything about SHIELD. She raised her daughter, Ruby (Dove Cameron) to be a killer. And made a deal with an alien group called the Confederacy to save the Earth. The Confederacy wanted two things in return: gravitonium and Inhumans. HYDRA possessed a particle infusion chamber that Hale planned to use to create the “Destroyer of Worlds.” The Destroyer of Worlds would be infused with gravitonium, giving them emense powers.
FitzSimmons tried to destory the chamber, but Ruby stopped them. Ruby wanted to be the Destroyer of Worlds and infused herself with some of the gravitonium. The process caused Ruby to lose her mind, but it was YoYo who killed Ruby. YoYo thought Ruby was the Destroyer of World and her death would end the loop. Nope! That only made Daisy and Mack more angry with YoYo. And Hale ran to the Confederacy to exact her revenge on SHIELD.
In the meantime, SHIELD rescued Talbot and took the chamber back to their base, the lighthouse. The Confederacy attacked the lighthouse, causing Talbot to infuse himself with the remaining gravitonium. This gave Talbot crazy powers! He took on the Confederacy and became their leader. He made Coulson go with him, prompting May and Daisy to attempt to rescue them. They were all considered prisoners of war and locked up. Daisy was given to the Kree leader Taryan, (Craig Parker) who also happens to be the father of her first Kree captor. She escaped his mind control. With help from Deke, everyone was able to escape and blow up the Confederacy. However, Talbot is still on the loose.
Save Coulson or Save the World
At the end of the last episode, Coulson collapsed. He is closer to death than the team thought. Daisy was able to obtain the Deathlok centipede serum. She asked Jemma to combine it with DNA from Daisy’s Inhuman mother, who had healing powers. She hopes that the DNA will heal Coulson’s dead cells and the serum will strengthen him. FitzSimmons said the serum could also stop Talbot. He suggested infusing the serum with the Kree berserker liquid Odium. There’s jsut one problem. This is the last of the centipede serum.
Taryan informed Talbot that Thanos was invading the Earth. Talbot took it upon himself to find more gravitonium so he would be able to defeat Thanos. He took the seer Robin Hinton, who knew where he would find gravitonium. She also knows he tears up the earth to get to it. And that brings us to the season finale.
