George Lucas recently sat down with CBS Morning News to talk about his upcoming movie Strange Magic and, I can’t believe I’m saying this, had some very interesting things to say all of which I agreed with.
George Lucas made Strange Magic for his daughters. He made this movie specifically for girls and he says that isn’t something you’re supposed to do. You can’t market adventure movies for girls. It’s still in “their” (the marketing folks) minds that girls won’t see those movies, so market for boys.
“I did Star Wars for 12-year-old boys,” he told anchors. “I have three girls, and I used to read Wizard of Oz to my daughter all the time, and I just figured I’ll make one of these [adventure films] for girls, because you’re not supposed to make movies for girls.”
When asked if he thought about the idea that being “for girls” would hurt the film at the box office, he replied,
I think girls go to the movies just like anybody else. That’s a marketing reality, but it’s very powerful. It’s very hard to counter it. They have their ideas about what movies will sell, [and] that’s what they do, the industry is kind of run by the marketing department. [Strange Magic]‘s got monsters and swordfighting and all that kind of stuff, which they’re playing up. They’re [playing] down the music and the fairies. – TheMarySue.com
I haven’t seen the movie and I probably wouldn’t have, but after seeing watching the CBS interview I will most certainly give it a chance. Also, I have found my Halloween costume! Heres the trailer…
Charlie Rose and Oprah’s best friend, Gayle, then ask him about the controversy surrounding The Oscars this year with the lack of diversity being represented in the nominations. Through some grunts and grumbles he explains why he’s not a member a The Academy…. and I agree with him. I agree with George Lucas. Wow, I never thought I’d say that again.
