Last night fans were able to see a better look at the live action Disney adaptation of Aladdin. The teaser gave us our first look at the big villain Jafar, the Princess Jasmine and even showed us a bit of the “Prince Ali” sequence. But the biggest moment came at the end when we got to see what Genie will look like in the film.
The preview starts at the Cave of Wonders. Jafar (with Iago on his shoulder) has taken Aladdin to retrieve the genie lamp. His staff is completely on point and I love it. Determined, Aladdin and Abu step into the cave. We’re then treated to sweeping vistas and a giant parade. A regal Princess Jasmine descends the palace steps with her father and tiger, Rajah. The Cave of Wonders begins to collapse! Then we finally see Aladdin rubbing the lamp and out comes the Genie.
I want to focus on the positives first. For one thing, the costumes look incredible. I mean I was geeking out over Jafar’s staff. They’re really nailing it. While, sure, Jasmine isn’t wearing powder blue all the time, her dress is gorgeous. If nothing else works in the film, it’s at least going to be one of the best looking of the year. I enjoy most of the cast and am really looking forward to seeing them together.
However, I have a huge gripe. Will Smith as the Genie looks terrible. So terrible in fact that a lot of Twitter are talking about how horrible the effects look. One fan had even compared it to The Scorpion King in The Mummy Returns. Yeesh. Now Smith has a huge hurdle to overcome and I don’t envy him for it. Trying to step into the shoes of the late and great Robin Williams is a very hard task. To then make him different and “live-action”, the film producers thought it best to make him look like a swole smurf? I genuinely don’t understand. If the same company can make Thanos look incredibly life like, what happened here? Maybe, just maybe, they’re not done working on the effects. However it’s not looking too good. At least we know he won’t be blue the whole time.
Additionally, I still do not like the casting of Smith for Genie. He struggles to not be a caricature of himself and it shows in most of his work. This appears to be the same case, which is really disappointing.
You’ll have to check it out for yourself! Be sure to come back to Geek Girl Authority for more Disney news. The film is directed by Guy Ritchie and written by John August and Ritchie. It stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, Billy Magnussen, and Numan Acar.
A thrilling and vibrant live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic, “Aladdin” is the exciting tale of the charming street rat Aladdin, the courageous and self-determined Princess Jasmine and the Genie who may be the key to their future.
Aladdin flies into theaters May 24th, 2019.
