Geeky Baby Showers: GAME OF THRONES (Lannister Edition)

GGA Geeky Baby Showers

We here at GGA feel that just one themed event in your life isn’t enough! So, we’ve decided to tackle baby showers in addition to our Geeky Wedding ideas.

Last month, we celebrated the surprise news that Wynonna Earp (and star Melanie Scrofano!) was pregnant. This month? Well, since Queen Cersei (Lena Headey) of the House Lannister, the First of Her Name, Queen of the Andals and the First Men, Protector of the Seven Kingdoms, has revealed to (her twin brother) Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) that he will be a father (again), why not plan a shower fit for the queen of the Seven Kingdoms. Even if her pregnancy ends up being a false claim or a shadow baby (as many fans theorize), a baby shower is still warranted.

So if we’re going Game of Thrones, Lannister specific, then there needs to be some royalty, some lions (we all know Cersei would never allow fraternization with Dragons or Wolves), and some medieval treachery warfare fun. Let’s begin, shall we?

Invitations

For the shower invitations, a simple, yet royal invitation is probably the way to go. My only suggestion with the invitation designed by Crissy at Crissy Design Co (etsy) would be to switch out the generic Game of Thrones shield for the Lannister crest. Close the envelope with the royal seal and your guests will know they have no choice but to attend. Because nobody defies the queen, right?

Decor

Front Door Wreath Sign

In lieu of a wreath, why not have a custom heraldry created for the baby-to-be? Hanging a print or painted sign from Karli’s etsy shop with this on your front door will signal to your guests that they have arrived at the correct location and proper castle for the festivities. Optional: replace the child’s name with virtues and traits with a name reveal to take place later!

What is “heraldry”, you ask? It is the system of designing and recording a coat of arms and other identifiers for a person or family. It isn’t really a well known practice in the United States, but abroad, it is still a customary fashion for some. In this instance, unless plenty of research is put into the creation, it would be just a fun way to bring together elements of the baby’s nursery theme, family history, and a touch of the geekery the child will inherit.

Banner/Streamers

In the entryway or over the gifts table, hang up this adorable ‘Baby Is Coming’ banner by Amy at Amy’s Occasions (etsy). A simple request to switch out the many house banners to just Lannister’s lion should be an acceptable alteration (or just request blank flags?). Yes, I know this feels more like a Stark banner than a Lannister banner, but it isn’t a lie, right?

Diaper Cake

I’m a fan of diaper cakes, ok? They are a nice way to create a centerpiece that is both art and useful to the new parents, no matter if they are made with disposables or cloth. Being a cake for Cersei, the current Iron Throne inhabitant, it makes sense the cake should be a throne. Pinterest provides two versions: a throne made of diapers and a more traditional tiered type cake with an Iron Throne cake topper (with optional soldiers and White Walkers).

An interesting alternative to the creativity of opening and rolling a cake is the option to have your subjects – I mean “guests” – bring a case of diapers to build a throne for the mother-to-be. While this does not look very comfortable, keep in mind that neither is that throne made of swords….

Photo Props

It has become sort of a new tradition to create props for guests to use while taking selfies and to create a hanging backdrop in a corner for the party guests to take their own little photographic memories. Instead of providing props, encourage everyone to arrive in a costume, either as a lord or lady or wealthy merchant (but this is a royal affair, so discourage any simple peasants). Throw a castle backdrop on the wall, like the Stone Wall from Oriental Trading Company, and pair it with a Lannister banner, like the one offered by Katrina at WolffyTreasures (etsy).

Snack Bar

Finger Finer Foods

Though he is the runt of the bunch, there is no denying that Cersei’s younger brother, Tyrion, knows how to have a good time. Leaving him in charge of catering will ensure a good spread for the queen and her guests.

  • Fresh fruit, like bunches of grapes and skewers of melon, will surely please. Feel free to get an Edible Arrangements bouquet!
  • Lay out two or three cracker varieties (there is such thing as too many options!) with a small selection of cheese bites (cubes or slices, both work fine).
  • Small, non-messy finger sandwiches are always a good go-to for socialite gatherings.
  • A non-alcoholic sparkling grape juice will provide a fizzy, sweet champagne alternative; likewise, a grape juice blend is always a good wine replacement.
  • For a hardier dining experience, miniature bread bowls with a ladle of the mother-to-be’s favorite soup is always an option.
  • Bonus Option: find a melon carver to create a work of art to display alongside the fruit plate!

CAKE!

Babies are weak. Defenseless. Lannisters are not. The Lannister army, therefore, should be represented somehow. The perfect way to do this is an army of cupcakes, each with the Lannister banner! This example (baker unknown – if you recognize this work, please let us know!) shows how intimidatingly gorgeous a huddle of banners can be. If you ignore the edible effigies of Ned Stark’s head on a pike, the center cake would also work for a Lannister’s baby shower. How? Well, it is simple, it is elegant (for a Lannister), and it portrays the house colors and sigil – what more could you want? Like I said, babies are weak little things and glorifying theme in a cake could be hazardous for the baker.

Alright. So, let’s say you do want to risk your life to bake Cersei a baby-themed cake. Something with an Iron Throne, the symbol of the ultimate royal status, should be acceptable. The following cake (also baker unknown) provides an adorable gender-neutral cake for any heir to the Iron Throne. Feel free to surround this one with the little cupcake army, though. Just to be safe.

Attire

Mom-to-be

I say let the queen wear whatever she wants. BUT do present her with a new crown. This gorgeous lion crown by Aya Lovely Jewelry (etsy) is actually inspired by Cersei herself, which makes it the perfect choice.

Guests

As mentioned earlier, encourage everyone to come in character as a Lord or Lady. The easiest thing, as a host, to provide would be gauze coverings for the ladies’ hair, a thin circlet crown (nothing near as fancy as the queen mother-to-be’s crown, though!), and some costume jewelry. For the sneaky Arya’s in the group, maybe wooden swords of various sizes – which should always be kept in their scabbard, of course.

Party Games, Activities, & Prizes

Games

Does running from a dagger to the back sound like a fun game? No? Oh. Ok, well…Perhaps Cersei would enjoy watching her guests play a round of musical chairs? Really, any game played at a Lannister’s Game of Thrones themed party would be for the Lannister’s benefit and not the enjoyment of their guests…. Probably best to not plan on anything; for the safety of the guests, y’know?

Oh, why not? Baby Bingo is always a fun way to keep the guests involved during the opening of the gifts. If the source of your invitations has a matching bingo board, like Crissy Design Co (etsy) does, then go with it (helps keep the theme flowing). Otherwise, feel free to create your own and print them out blank. As guests arrive, hand them a board and have them fill in the squares (IN INK) with gifts they expect to see unwrapped. Allowing the guests to create their own cards keeps the mystery open as to who will win since each card is randomized by each player. To keep collusion to a minimum, announce just before the mother-to-be sits to unwrap the gifts what kind of game will win: will it be Four Corners? Diagonal Only? Column Only? Row Only? Will there be any additional wildcard slots aside from FREE?

Prizes

With the fun goody bag set to repay Lannister debts, an extra goody bag might be an option. A Lannister trinket is also a fun idea: a non-monetary debt owed to the winner signified with a lion shaped ring or pendant provides the winner something tangible to wear later.

Goody Bags

Look, this is a party for a QUEEN. The “goody bag” you walk away with is the fact you walk away unscathed for not crossing Cersei. However, it has not gone unnoticed that your guests brought grand gifts for the new prince or princess, so maybe a little “thank you” isn’t a bad idea. Or, perhaps, nobody really wanted to be at the party and you needed to bribe them into arriving and behaving? In either case, purchasing a bulk bag of chocolate coins and dividing them up into discreet money pouches that are passed out as guests leave may be the best option. After all, a Lannister always pays their debts, right?

Gift Ideas

Alright, let’s say you aren’t hosting, but you’ve been invited. What can you gift to the mom-to-be for the baby?

  • While it is customary for the child’s father to provide his (or her!) first sword, a sword rattle wouldn’t be considered a terrible gift.
  • No new parent wants to wake a child when checking on a sleeping baby. Help them out with a Game of Thrones cube night light.
  • Probably not what Cersei has in mind, but why not show Uncle Tyrion some love with this adorable “I drink and I ‘no’ things” onsie?
  • Speaking of onsies…Every mother has ambitions for her child. This “Future Ruler of the Seven Kingdoms” onsie just announces what everyone already knows.
  • Castles can get a bit drafty. Commission a personalized quilted blanket for the baby, like this royal gold Game of Thrones blankie!

I am fairly confident that Cersei would let me live after this baby shower…. If there is anything I missed or if you have your own suggestions, just let me know! And if you do pull off a Game of Thrones themed baby shower of your own, we’d love to hear about it!
