Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week. Every week, we will highlight an awesome female character from, or a creator of, geeky media.
She only needs one name…Michonne (played in the TV show by Danai Gurira). She is described as intelligent, strong, sensible, caring and attractive. She is the katana wielding warrior in The Walking Dead comic book and television series. Michonne is such a powerful force in the zombie apocalypse that she has her own side comic book titled, Michonne Special! On the television show, she’s like royalty. The Queen if you will. And she rules side by side with her king Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). They are TWD’s super couple, lovingly known as Richonne.
The Real Deal:
Michonne’s debut in the second season was big moment for fans of both the comic book series and the television series. This epic character had fans cheering when her silhouette appeared at the end of the season two finale. The television character has definitely lived up to the comic book hype and then some. Within a season, Michonne became a part of the The Walking Dead family, becoming a mother figure to Judith and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) and trusted confidant to Rick.
Michonne is known for her amazing fighting skills. When fans see the katana, they know Michonne means business. In a fight, Michonne can hold her own, but she is better when she has people to fight for. Her ferocity turns up to eleven when someone or something threatens her family. You don’t mess with mama bear!
Michonne has a sensibility about her that keeps her and her loved ones safe. She is not afraid to stand up to her friends when she disagrees with their motives. She has even disagreed with Rick’s decisions from time to time, and never backed down from telling him so. Sometimes he listens, sometimes Michonne has to take matters in to her own hands to keep everyone safe.
Why Does She Matters:
Michonne has become such an important figure in Rick Grimes’ world. After the death of his son, Rick will need her support more than ever. She compliments Rick well, sometimes even being the voice of reason. She keeps him grounded and at peace, when times are tough. And at the same time, she’s not afraid to need Rick. They give and take just enough to be the healthiest couple in the apocalypse.
Michonne represents a strength in women not often portrayed on television. She is brave, loyal, sexy, a true warrior and at the same time, very human. She loves fiercely and fearlessly; knows when to fight and when to talk things through. She is cautious, yet warm and accepting of new people. Overall, she has given the TWD family a matriarchal figure to look up to and a partner for Rick to lean on. Michonne matters because she is a proven leader, a loyal teammate, a loving friend and a force to be reckoned with.
If the world were to end tomorrow, not only would I want Michonne on my team, but I’d also want her to teach me all of her skills!
