Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. Each week, we will highlight a favorite female character or creator of geeky media. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for young girls to have said example to follow.
DISCLAIMER: The following contains spoilers for The Walking Dead up to the season ten. If you are not caught up with the series, then you may not want to read on, but if you don’t care about spoilers either way, then continue!
She only needs one name…Michonne (played in the TV show by Danai Gurira). She is intelligent, strong, kind and one hot mama! She is the katana wielding warrior in The Walking Dead comic book and television series. On the television show, Michonne is The Queen.
The Real Deal:
Michonne debuted in season two of TWD. This epic character had fans cheering when her silhouette appeared at the end of the finale. Michonne quickly became a part of the The Walking Dead family. She is the only mother figure to Judith (Cailey Fleming) and Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs) and trusted confidant to Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). They became TWD’s super couple, lovingly known as Richonne.
Michonne has a sensibility about her that keeps her and her loved ones safe. She is not afraid to stand up to her friends when she disagrees with their motives. She is known for her amazing fighting skills. In a fight, Michonne can hold her own, but she is better when she has people to fight for. Her ferocity is unmatched when someone or something threatens her family. And she is vulnerable when she can’t save those she loves.
In season eight, Carl was bitten by a walker. Michonne felt she had lost another son. She and Rick leaned on each other for comfort. So when Rick sacrificed himself to save his community, Michonne was alone. They never found his body, but Michonne has no evidence that he’s alive. She was left to raise young Judith and Rick’s son, Rick Jr. (Antony Azor) on her own. Her world revolves around her kids and doing everything she can to keep them safe.
Why Does She Matters:
Michonne has become such an important figure in the Walking Dead universe. She represents a strength in women not often portrayed on television. Even in the face of scrutiny, she stands tall with her head held high. She makes no apologies for protecting her kids. She loves fiercely and fearlessly. Michonne is cautious, yet warm and accepting of new people and ideas. Michonne matters because she is a proven leader, a loyal teammate, a loving mother and a force to be reckoned with.
If the world were to end tomorrow, I want Michonne on my team. So be like Michonne and SLAY ALL DAY!
