Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. Now, this not only includes fictional female characters in geeky media but creators as well. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.
DISCLAIMER: The following contains spoilers for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe and Masters of the Universe: Revelation.
Teela is the Captain of the Royal Guard at the palace of Eternos. She is responsible for training and protecting Prince Adam of Eternia. She also assists He-Man in battles against Skeletor and the other villains in Eternia without ever knowing that he is actually Adam. Teela is the daughter of Sorceress (another secret kept from her) and after almost being kidnapped by Mer-Man, she is taken in by Man-At-Arms. In an early episode of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Teela uncovers this secret, but Sorceress wipes her memory for Teela’s own protection.
Over the years, Teela has fought alongside He-Man and the others to protect Eternia. In Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation, she finally learns of Adam’s secret upon his death. Angered that everyone kept this secret, she turned her back on the royal family and her new position as Man-At-Arms and became a mercenary. But when Eternia needs her most, she heads out on a mission to save it once again. This journey has Teela facing her past, present and future and learning to forgive and move on.
The Real Deal:
Teela is the real deal. Across all of the Masters of the Universe series, she is a badass. Over the decades, she has been portrayed by Linda Gary, Cathy Weseluck, Lisa Ann Beley, Chelsea Field and most recently, Sarah Michelle Gellar. She is skilled in hand-to-hand combat and with weapons but also genuinely sensible and level-headed. However, she does have a bit of a reckless streak, which sometimes led to some pretty dangerous situations.
But she doesn’t let this stop her from continuing to fight alongside He-Man and the others against Skeletor and his army. She is resilient and even if her plans don’t pan out, she still fights with all she can to help good prevail. Even after she learns of He-Man’s true identity and that she has been lied to, she still uses her skills to help those around her. Just without the Royal guard behind her and for a bit more gold.
Why She Matters:
So why does Teela matter? In a series dominated by strong male characters, Teela is our female representation. And she isn’t just a damsel in distress or love interest for Prince Adam/He-Man. She is an intricate part of the team and fights alongside everyone. She shows us that you can be feminine while also strong, skilled in hand-to-hand combat and fighting enemies like Skeletor. Teela is smart and ambitious as well. She is willing to lay her life on the line to fight alongside her friends and those she loves to save the day.
So, be like Teela. Be strong and feminine, ambitious, smart and fight for your friends and loved ones no matter the cost.
