Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week. Every week, we will highlight an awesome female character from, or a creator of, geeky media.
During the month of February, we are focusing on Black crushes of the week in celebration of Black History Month
Storm (aka Ororo Munroe)
Fast Facts:
Storm, the weather-controlling, white-haired, butt-kicking mutant, has been a mainstay in X-Men stories since her first comic appearance in 1976. Whether she’s on the page, animated, or in live action (played by both Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp) Storm is a force to be reckoned with.
The Real Deal:
Storm’s origin story, like so many others’, begins with being orphaned at a young age. Ororo (her given name, for those who didn’t know) lived parentless in Cairo, Egypt from the age of six. She is of Kenyan and American descent and joined the X-Men after being found in the Serengeti where she was heralded as a goddess for her extraordinary powers.
Why Does She Matter:
I will probably have the words “representation matters” tattooed on my forehead because I don’t think it can be said enough. Storm matters because representation matters. Storm was one of the first major Black female comic book characters. She represents a huge step forward for blerds (black nerds, a term coined by Scrubs in 2006) everywhere. I think it’s no coincidence that Storm’s first appearance was the same year that Negro History Week was expanded to become Black History Month. In addition to being important as a symbol of national progress in the US, Storm also has some pretty badass powers. Her ability to change the weather is, frankly, way cooler than any of the other X-Men’s powers because of its everyday applications. How many of us have wanted to make sure there’s a clear day for our romantic Valentine’s Day picnic? Or that humidity stays down so our fly new hairstyle can stay intact? Oh, and it’s a huge tactical advantage for the rest of the team. Storm, despite her loner tendencies growing up, becomes an amazing team player. I think the best way to sum Storm up is as a goddess-turned-team-player who just wants to use her powers for good and have everyone be at her level.
