Sara Lance is the GGA Crush of the Week

Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on the women who inspire us. Each week, we will highlight a favorite female character or creator of geeky media. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for young girls to have said example to follow.

DISCLAIMER: The following contains possible spoilers up to the series finale of Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow season five. If you are not caught up with the series, then you may not want to read on, but if you don’t care about spoilers either way, then continue!

Sara Lance, the White Canary

Fast Facts:

Sara Lance (played by Caity Lotz) is one bad mamba jamba. She’s the original Canary, now White Canary. A member of the League of Assassins. Former member of Team Arrow. Captain of the Waverider and leader of the Legends of Tomorrow.  And, the Paragon of Destiny. Being a superhero may look easy, but Sara’s road to Legendary status was anything but.

Sara is the daughter of a man of law Quinten Lance (Paul Blackthorne) and free spirited mother Dinah Lance (Alex Kingston), and sister to the perfect daughter Laurel (Katie Cassidy).  Growing up wasn’t easy.  Sara’s relationships with her family have always been strained. So it’s no surprise that Sara was rebellious. That risky nature would pay off later in life.  But first, she had to literally lose everything, including her life to understand what’s most important to her.

Sara is one of few positively portrayed LGBTQ characters on television.  Her sexual orientation has never been a focal point of the shows in which she appears.  Sara doesn’t hide her sexuality and it has never held her back from winning a fight.  Although finding love hasn’t been easy.  From Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) to Nyssa Al-Ghul (Katrina Law), there was always something getting in their way.  Sara is currently dating Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallen). The only thing getting in their way is Ava’s inability to express emotions.

The Real Deal

Arrowverse Legends team

Sara is known for her deadly fighting skills, quick thinking, loyalty, and perseverance. Her League of Assassins training is what makes Sara most dangerous.  She is agile and quick on her feet.  She never backs down from a fight and asserts her authority no matter what time period she’s in.  Sara knows how to make tough decisions under pressure. She stays focused on her mission and ensures the safety of her team. Unfortunately, she’s lost a few team members along the way.  That’s when she shows how strong she really is.

Sara’s icy blue stare may scare her enemies, but deep down inside, she has a huge heart.  Her love for her family, the Lances and the Legends are what motivates her the most.  She loves just as fiercely as she fights. Losing people is tough, but Sara is used to dealing with pain.  The Legends helped Sara heal from that heartbreak of losing her sister and gave her the support she needed to get through her father’s death.  (Although he eventually returned to life).

Sara gives the Arrowverse a voice of reason…making her the Mom of the Legends (someone has to keep them in line).  She looks at the big picture and see what could go wrong.  At the same time, she thinks clearly about how to overcome those obstacles.  She is the Paragon of Destiny because its destiny that guides her story.  She is a born leader, not a follower.  Her rebellious nature earned her the title of captain and now she protects destiny at all costs.

Why She Matters:

Sara has proven that she doesn’t need saving.  She struggles with her self worth, but always has a friend nearby to remind her.  The darkness in her past has prepared her for future encounters, but also tests her humanity.  Sara inspires people to be more than human.  She inspires others to accept their flaws and use them to become stronger.

Sara may wear many hats, but she refuses to label herself.  She knows in every crisis, that she will discover something new about herself.  Now that Oliver Queen is gone, Sara Lance has a new purpose. Not only to continue Oliver’s legacy, but to build upon it and create her own.

So be like Sara Lance. Love Hard. Fight Fair. Be Legendary in your own way!
