Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week. Here, we shine a spotlight on our favorite ladies in genre culture who inspire us. Our crushes range from fictional female characters in our favorite genre shows, movies and books…to women behind the scenes in geeky media.
DISCLAIMER: The following contains spoilers for The Walking Dead, up to the current season. If you are not caught up with the show, then you may not want to read on, but if you don’t care about spoilers either way, then continue!
If I had to choose one word to describe The Walking Dead’s Rosita Espinosa (played by Christian Serratos), it would be fierce. Other words would be independent, hot tempered and fearless. She gives new meaning to the word slayer, whether she’s stepping up to clear out the dead or the living who threaten her family. This is one Momma Bear you don’t want mess with.
We don’t know much about her story before the apocalypse. Rosita first appeared on The Walking Dead in season four as partner to Abraham Ford (Michael Cudlitz) as they escorted the brilliant Eugene Porter (Josh McDermitt) to Washington D.C. In six seasons, Rosita has proven her worth time and time again. She has also made many mistakes, but learned from every one of them. Rosita is a part of a collective of strong women on The Walking Dead. And she only gets better every season.
The Real Deal:
Rosita has the looks but more importantly, she has the skills to survive an apocalypse. She can fix almost anything, is knowledgeable about any weapon and she is dangerous in hand to hand combat. She acquired these skills from different men she dated over the years. Rosita is perfectly capable of surviving on her own if she were to leave Alexandria. Now that she has Coco, she has to learn a whole new skill set…Motherhood.
Being a mom is a tough job, but Rosita has help from the men who care about her the most. She is dating the only man who truly listens to her, Father Gabriel (Seth Gilliam). He keeps her grounded and understands why she becomes restless. But Gabriel never holds her back from a fight. And we can’t forget Eugene. Eugene has always been in love with Rosita. And even though she turned him down, he will always be there for her. Not that she needs him…
Rosita has never given her trust easily. She prefers to observe people and see who they are before fully trusting anyone. People need to show her that they will stand and fight with her, instead of trying to protect her. She needs to see that they trust her as much as she trusts them. That’s why she was so loyal to Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln). From Rick, Rosita learned to be considerate of her family before acting on her emotions. Now that Rosita is a leader and a parent, she thinks through her plan of action before acting on it. Coco’s safety comes first, but if Rosita needs to jump into the fight she will.
Why She Matters:
The fire within Rosita is stronger than ever. As protected as the communities are, they clearly aren’t as safe as they thought. Rosita is a great leader to have in any war. Being on the Alexandria leadership council gives her the opportunity to assess the danger outside of their gates. She is still hot-tempered and eager to fight when the community is threatened. She still doesn’t trust newcomers. And that’s what Alexandria needs right now.
What Rosita needs is to be able to make decisions to keep her and Coco safe. To protect her family in Alexandria, Hilltop and Oceanside. To not be silenced, even if she’s wrong. Or to be held back when she needs to fight.
So be like Rosita. Assess the situation, assert your authority, and don’t let anyone or anything hold you back!
