Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. Now, this not only includes fictional female characters in geeky media, but creators as well. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for kids to have said example to follow.
DISCLAIMER: The following is rife with spoilers galore for Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet. If you’re not already caught up with this Apple TV+ comedy, you may want to remedy that now. You won’t regret it.
Rachel
Fast Facts:
Now, we don’t know much about Rachel (Ashly Burch) save that she’s a tester at Ian Grimm’s (Rob McElhenney) video game company. She tests the game Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet for flaws amid said game’s development alongside her coworker Dana (Imani Hakim). Rachel is a punk rock chick who loves to game. She’s also madly in love with Dana and we see their friendship blossom into potentially something more over the course of Season 1.
The Real Deal:
Rachel is the real deal, folks. She’s a girl living and thriving in the gaming industry. In addition, Rachel is working as a video game tester in an industry that’s predominately male. Rachel is immensely intelligent, compassionate, and driven by her principles. She’s no-nonsense when it comes to injustice and wrongdoings. Rachel isn’t afraid to smack the patriarchy across the face and keeps her male coworkers’ expansive egos in check. Not to mention, her strong moral compass is what attracts people to her. She’s also not afraid to love who she loves. Rachel is comfortable in her own sexuality and expresses that freely with pride. She’s armed with a sharp-as-a-whip sense of humor to boot. Rachel is very supportive of Dana’s career and wholeheartedly wants what’s best for her.
Why She Matters:
Alright, why does she matter? Rachel is LGBTQIA+ and living her truth. Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet doesn’t make a big fuss about her sexuality, which is how it should be in real life. Not only that, but Rachel is a gamer girl. We could use some estrogen to temper the pervasive testosterone in the video game industry. Now, women and girls everywhere can watch Rachel and rest in the assurance that their dreams are tangible and wholly possible to achieve. In addition, Rachel’s blatant intolerance for discrimination and injustice along with how she handles it is something we can all aspire to have.
So, be like Rachel. Strengthen your moral compass, because it’ll guide you wherever you go. Love who you love, passionately and without inhibitions. Oh, and always arm yourself with a sardonic one-liner. You never know when you’ll need to fend off the creeps with sarcasm.
