Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. Now, this not only includes fictional female characters in geeky media but creators as well. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.
Letitia “Leti” Lewis (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) was born and raised in the southside of Chicago by her mother, who spent more time partying with random strangers than watching her own children. One night her mother left for one of these parties and never returned. After that, Leti went to live at a boarding house where she would pray for her mother to come home. In high school, Leti became the only female member of the Southside Futurists Science Fiction Club alongside her childhood friend Atticus “Tic” Freeman (Jonathan Majors). Sometime after high school, Leti left Chicago to follow her passion for photography and become a civil rights advocate.
At the beginning of the series, she returns home to find her true home though her relationship with her half-sister Ruby Baptiste (Wunmi Mosaku) is strained. She refuses to allow her to stay with her, so Leti decides to travel with Tic and his uncle George Freeman (Courtney B. Vance) on their trip to find Tic’s dad (Michael Kenneth Williams). On this trip, Leti is introduced to the terrifying supernatural horrors that can exist in their world. Leti helps Tic and the others uncover the secrets of the cult Order of the Ancient Dawn. Throughout the series, Leti faces off against the ghost of a murderer, supernatural monsters, investigates catacombs found underneath the Museum of Science and so much more.
The Real Deal:
Letitia “Leti” Lewis is the real deal. Leti is confident, driven and absolutely fashionable. But don’t let that take away from her shining feature. She is a civil rights advocate and even when she nearly dies, she is resurrected and has a world of terrifying supernatural monsters on her tail; she is still fighting for equal rights. In the series, she receives a mysterious inheritance, which she uses to purchase a house on Chicago’s all-white North side. She fixes up the home and creates a haven for her Black friends. Even when her white neighbors try everything to force them out, she stands up for herself and her newfound family. She wants everyone to know that she and her friends belong there too.
Why She Matters:
There are a million reasons why Letitia “Leti” Lewis matters. She is intelligent, strong and not afraid to face danger head-on. Throughout the series, she throws herself in front of her friends and loved ones to protect them without a thought for herself. She battles against both supernatural horrors and the real-life horrors of 1950s America. She doesn’t let anything stand in her way and when she can outfight them, she outthinks them. Leti is an inspirational woman in the science fiction genre and is someone everyone can look up to.
So be like Leti. Be confident, strong, an inspiration and fearless in the face of both supernatural and real-world horrors. Be an advocate for social change and fight with all your heart.
