Updated on:

Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. Now, this not only includes fictional female characters in geeky media, but creators as well. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for young girls to have said example to follow.

DISCLAIMER: The following is rife with spoilers galore for The Magicians. If you’re not already caught up, I suggest you remedy that now. Especially since Season 5 is airing tonight!

Kady Orloff-Diaz

Fast Facts:

Kady Orloff-Diaz (Jade Tailor) formerly studied at Brakebills University alongside her boyfriend Penny (Arjun Gupta) and his friends. She’s the daughter of a hedge witch, Hannah, who worked for Marina (Kacey Rohl). Kady also served Marina by providing insider high magic information for the latter’s hedge witch safe house in NYC. She also discreetly nicked spells from Brakebills for the hedges to use.

Next, Kady befriended Julia (Stella Maeve) and the two became involved in a group called Free Trader Beowulf. The group’s intent was to summon a goddess – Our Lady Underground in particular. However, they instead brought forth a trickster god named Reynard the Fox who brutally murdered most of the group and raped Julia. Kady witnessed it all and was able to flee. Kady and Julia spent some time on the vengeance warpath, hellbent on eradicating Reynard for his atrocities.

In addition, Kady lost her mother no thanks in part to Marina. Fast forward to Season 3, and we find Kady grieving heavily after Penny passed away. She toyed with drug use to cope. However, Kady slowly pulled herself out of the abyss. In Season 4, Kady was forced to interact with Penny from Timeline 23. Not only that, but Penny 23 was actually dating Julia in his own timeline. She also rallied together hedge witches from all over to rebel against the Library for limiting their magical resources and keeping tabs on them.

The Real Deal:

Now, Kady is the real deal. She’s headstrong, yes. But her resilience has benefited her immensely throughout her life. She’s been betrayed countless times and sold as a servant to Marina courtesy of her own mother. Kady also endured the deaths of her mother and boyfriend. In short, this chick has been through some sh*t.

However, despite the curve balls life has thrown at her, despite her own struggles with mental health and drug abuse, Kady has risen victorious. She’s also an extremely talented battle magician – not only that, but she rivals Alice in being an advanced magician in all aspects. You would definitely want her on your side in a fight. She’s fortuitous, clever and loyal to her loved ones. Her exterior may seem cold as ice, but deep down Kady loves to kick back, crack a joke and fave fun.

Why She Matters:

Alright, so why does she matter? Kady is a fighter. She’s fought tooth and nail for everything – to be seen as more than a hedge witch, for starters. Kady has also fought for her fellow hedges, and done everything in her power to protect them. She’s a lover and a fighter, y’all. Kady is an inspiration to us all, and a reminder that we can overcome any obstacles standing in our path. If Kady, after all she’s been through, refuses to give up, then we can’t either.

So, be like Kady. When life knocks you down, get back up again and keep going. Stand strong for those who cannot stand for themselves. Do the right thing, even if it’s the unpopular thing. Oh, and never pass up an opportunity to belt out a jazz number.
