Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. Now, this not only includes fictional female characters in geeky media but creators as well. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.
DISCLAIMER: The following has mega spoilers for USA Network’s Psych.
Juliet O’Hara
Fast Facts:
Juliet O’Hara (Maggie Lawson) is one of Santa Barbara’s police detectives who work closely with Shawn Spencer (James Roday) and Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill) of the Pysch Detective Agency. She grew with her mother and brothers while her father was pretty absent. When she first joins the police department, she felt frustrated with her partner Lassiter (Timothy Omundson) and her other coworkers, who did not take her seriously due to her relatively young age.
She spends much of the early seasons proving her worth by solving cases and thinking outside of the box. Juliet is the gentle counterpoint to Lassiter’s rigid police style. However, she is clearly no pushover, which leads her coworkers to see her as the assist that she is finally. She eventually gains enough of the department’s admiration that they trust her without question. With their help, she grows more comfortable in her role and eventually takes on more responsibility within the department.
The Real Deal:
Juliet O’Hara is the real deal. Juliet isn’t just a young detective, but she is also female in a male-dominated field. She spends quite a bit of time having her theories about cases overlooked by Lassiter. However, she doesn’t let this get her down, nor does she let this stop her from pushing forward. Every episode, she uses her voice and even goes behind Lassiter and her other coworkers’ backs to follow up on clues. She is also more open to following up on Shawn’s information when others would push him off.
Juliet also has a great deal of compassion. She helps to balance out her partnership with Lassiter’s tough demeanor. And while he does frustrate her initially and from time to time, she can see how much he truly wants to help people. She brings out the best in those she works with and uses her position to protect the people of Santa Barbara. We also can’t forget to mention just how much of a badass Juliet is. She is wicked quick with a gun and can hold her own in a fight.
Why She Matters:
Juliet O’Hara definitely matters! She has brains and brawns. Juliet is a badass detective who can handle her own in a fight and isn’t afraid to throw down if need be while also bringing together even the toughest clues. Juliet also has a compassionate side. It’s this compassion that makes Juliet such a memorable character. She sees those involved in each of the cases as humans who need to be treated well and is a great balance to Lassiter’s stern and grim police work. Juliet’s work truly means something to her and she is constantly looking to better herself and those around her. And we can’t forget how amazing her facial expressions are. Doubt us? Here is an entire thread of Juliet’s facial expressions to get lost in!
So be like Juliet O’Hara. Be a badass with both brains, brawn and compassion, and don’t let age, gender, or anything else keep you from your dreams.
