Welcome to this week’s installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. Now, this not only includes fictional female characters in geeky media but creators as well. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow.
Josefina “Jo” Lupo (Erica Cerra) was the Deputy Sheriff of a small town called Eureka, Oregan. She originally served under Sherrif William Cobb (Maury Cobb) and then was passed over for promotion when he retired for former US Marshal Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson). This led to a bit of animosity between the two, but they eventually learned to work together and become friends. In her youth, she had dreams of becoming a dancer. However, growing up with three brothers, she gave up that dream and took a different path. Before coming to Eureka, she served in the United States Army and a Special Forces member, which gave her some “tough guy” credibility.
Throughout the series, she was tasked with keeping the scientists from destroying the town with their science experiments. Over her years as Deputy Sheriff, Jo helped stop a black hole, fought against evil robots, had her DNA stolen by a thief and so much more. At one point, she was sent back in time along with Carter, Dr. Allison Blake (Salli Richardson-Whitfield), Dr. Henry Deacon (Joe Morton) and Dr. Douglas Fargo (Neil Grayston) during a Founder’s Day celebration. When she returned to the present day, the timeline had been changed and she learned that she had become head of security at Global Dynamics. She spent the last few years before the Department of Defense shut down Eureka babysitting some of the smartest people in the world.
The Real Deal:
Jo Lupo is the real deal. She is a badass with a love for all types of firearms. Her personal hobbies actually include how fast she can dismantle and reassemble her guns. She can also hold her own in a fight and has proven her worth time and time again. But it isn’t Jo’s skills with firearms and hands that help her survive a workday in Eureka. It is her patience that is the real winner. The patience to deal with brilliant scientists who let their experiments nearly blow up the town, music that causes Zane (Niall Matter) to burn her house down and artificial suns that almost go supernova. Yes, we are pretty certain she has the patience of a saint.
Why She Matters:
Why does Jo Lupo matter? Well, our bonafide badass Deputy Sheriff is one of the two non-geniuses that can deal with the nonsense that seems to never end in Eureka. Now Jo may not be the smartest in the room, but that doesn’t stop her from understanding what is going on around her. Over the years, she has absorbed quite a bit of knowledge which has paid off when left to fend for herself against killer robots and dealing with the town on her own when Carter leaves her in charge. Jo is strong, smart and exactly the person you’d want to fight next to.
So, be like Jo. Have the patience to deal with stressful situations, protect your friends when their problems go a bit haywire and absorb the information around you to better yourself in the future.
